100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – Stanleyites were regaled with a feast of oratory at the opera house on Sunday evening; the occasion being a lecture on “Homeless children and juvenile courts.”
 
Reseburg Ramblings – The foundation for the new Lutheran St. Paul Church at Reseburg was completed last week, and the cornerstone was laid on Sunday afternoon.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
St. Bernard’s parochial school closed its 1932-33 term with graduations exercises at St. Bernard’s Church.  The graduates were: Arthur Ebben, Melvin Haas, Hermiss Schmidt, Margaret Yetsko, Marcella Mertens, Mildred Alger, Evelyn Schmidt, Clarabell Bauernfeind, Doris Soderberg, Cecelia Wink, Margaret Neis and Audrey Pettit.
 
Town of f News – R. L. Rosemeyer was appointed town treasurer to fill the vacancy of Frank Skaleski who moved on his farm located in another county.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A killer tornado, whip-lashing a 10-mile swath through Worden and Reseburg townships Wednesday night, left one person dead, five in Stanley hospital, three persons under doctor’s care in its wake of devastation.  Killed in the tornado was Mrs. John Lato, 36.
 
Bob Dawson, of WEAU television station, Eau Claire, notified the Thorp Courier office Tuesday that a telethon for tornado disaster victims will be held Saturday evening from 10:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
The new Miss Thorp and court for 1983: Miss Congeniality – Sherri Lendosky, second runner-up – Terry Wetzel, Miss Thorp – Julie Roytek, and first runner-up – Naomi Bieno.
 
This Sunday, June 12, Holy Assumption Orthodox Church of Lublin will be celebrating its Seventy Fifth Anniversary.
 
The newly installed officers for the Thorp Lions Club: Harvey Boie – president, Richard Boie – first vice, Bob Mitchell – Second vice president, Bob Gulcynski – assistant secretary-treasurer, Tom Smasal – twister and Denny Meyer – lion tamer.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
The Thorp Public Library will host a special centennial program and open house on Saturday, June 13 at 1:00 p.m.  The Thorp Public Library officially began on June 11, 1898 and was located in the rooms over the Thorp Courier office.  William Wagner was acting librarian.
 
Snowpuppy Software of Thorp has won a contract to product and host a web site for the Town of Gilman, beating out tow other bidders.
