100 Years Ago (1908)

Gilman Newslets – While hunting seven miles west of here on Sunday last Oscar Anderson accidentally shot and killed himself.
 
Polley Notes – The Yellow River Log and Lumber Co. have their big store in full running order.  Ora Nye is behind the counter.  The saw mill is well underway.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Reynolds – Neillsville Creamery Inc. has taken over the Neillsville Milk Products Co., and the plant has been fully converted for the manufacture of Muenster Cheese and by-products.
 
The Thorp Lions Club has taken up the project of furnishing the children and lovers of ice skating, a place to enjoy themselves this winter.  They purchased a parcel of land just south of the Thorp Bottling Works factory from Ed Asselin with 275 feet frontage and 150 feet deep.
 
19-inch soft body baby doll, She cries! She sleeps! 98¢; steel autos and trucks with real electric lights! 25¢ each; mechanical dancing donkey and elephant 10¢ each; painting and drawing books, old favorites such as A.B.C. and Mother Goose 10¢ each.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
The Thorp Telephone Company installed their 1000th telephone on Saturday, November 22nd, at the Leo Dulek residence on the west side of the city of Thorp.
 
Louis V. Kaczor, 61, retired as letter carrier on rural route No. 3 at the Thorp Post Office effective November 30, 1958.  His service in government employ had reached a total of 41 years and eight months of which two years and two months were spent in the U. S. Army in World War I and the rest of that time as rural mail carrier.
 
The most talked about subject in Thorp was the record cold for the season.  The low recorded at the Thorp Courier office during the nighttime was a minus ten degrees.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Old Man Winter made an early visit to the Thorp area on Sunday night and Monday, dumping over twelve inches of snow, causing school to be cancelled, hazardous driving conditions, and generally, slowing down of everything.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Frank Ogurek of Thorp received his “Knight of the Year” Award from Joe Lato at the Knights of Columbus banquet, which was held Sunday, October 18, 1998 at the St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Church hall.
