100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – And now the rumor is revived of Stanley becoming a county seat of a new county to be created out of a part of Chippewa, Clark and Taylor Counties.
 
Gilman Newslets – Electric lights have been placed in the Gilman Mfg. Co’s office and also in the S. M. & P. depot.
 
Bobbs’ Mill and Country’ Round – Clyde Bobb purchased a camera and joined the ranks of amateur photographers.
 
Local modern woodmen are agitating the question of building a new hall for lodge and general purposes.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
The Cosmic Masquerade at the Thorp Opera House sponsored by the Thorp Lions Club and the merchants of Thorp was held last Friday evening.
 
The residence of Frank Papierniak at Gilman, WI, was destroyed by fire on Friday last.
 
Easter will fall earlier this year than in many years past.  Easter can come no earlier than March 22 and no later than April 25.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Mail which was due for Thorp residents Monday was not received until the following morning, Tuesday because of two Soo Line freight trains derailment.
 
Edward G. Milawski Jr., Thorp, enlisted in the Air Force and entered inactive duty on Jan. 20.
 
A former Thorp resident, Carl (Red) Wyczawski, Mr. Baseball and Mr. Polka of New Ulm (MN) in 1958, was named New Ulm’s outstanding man of last year at the annual Distinguished Service Award banquet held this past week there.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Board of Education approved a notion to possibly reduce the staff at the high school up to two full positions by a unanimous vote of 5-0 at a special meeting of the Board held Monday, Jan. 30.
 
The Thorp Lions Club was visited by Arlyn Mills and Harold Hallanger Thursday, Jan. 26, and was brought up to date regarding the progress of the Clark County Health Care Center construction project.  The project is about 80 percent complete and is scheduled to be done in May 1984.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Kellie Luzinski is a triple winner in the 11th Annual Lions Peace Poster Contest, which is sponsored locally by the Thorp Lioness Club.
 
Can it be that Thorp will lose its rifle range?  The Clark County Board of Supervisors will meet this Thursday to decide if Sections 25 and 36 in the Town of Worden will be offered for sale for a minimum of 80% of its estimated value.  If so, the Thorp Sportsman’s Club will be given $1500 in compensation.  It’s not a popular idea for most area sports enthusiasts.  The secluded spot surrounded by sandhills is a safe place for hunters to sight their guns.  Hunter safety classes are also taught at the range.
