100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The saw mill of the N-W L. Co. here is undergoing such alterations and repairs that it will scarcely be ready for sawing lumber for at least two months.
 
High School Notes – The first meeting of the Band of Mercy was held in the second primary Friday afternoon March 5.  The object of the Band of Mercy is to encourage brave, generous and thoughtful deeds.  Seventy-five children took the Ban of Mercy Pledge, which is – “I will try to be kind to all harmless living creatures and try to protect them from cruel usage.”
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
The chopping contest sponsored by the Farmers hardware last Friday morning was witnessed by several hundred interested people near the hardware store.  Conrad Barth and Caesar Barth were the only contestants registered.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Town Line patrons of the White Way cheese factory received their checks Thursday.  Thirty cents per lb. was the price paid for butter fat.
 
Library Notes – The total circulation of books for the month of February was 1,717.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Old Man Winter, determined to make Mr. Groundhog’s prediction stand up; dumped hundreds of tons of snow in Northern Clark County and this area of Taylor and Chippewa Counties during Thursday night.  A total of 8 inches of snow fell in this area during the night.
 
Wisconsin’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow is 17 year-old Dorothy Krultz of Greenwood High School.  She will receive a $1500 scholarship from General Mills for gaining the highest score in the state in a written homemaking examination.
 
On the eve of seeing one of the smallest turn-out of voters of the polls in Thorp’s history, the city council Monday passed a resolution for a referendum ballot to be presented to the people of Thorp to alternate the terms of city officials.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The truck owned by John A. Barth was removed from McGorgan Creek last Friday, March 2, after a collision with a logging semi truck sent the vehicle spinning and into the creek.  Barth, 92, Rte. 3 Thorp, was hospitalized with head injuries from the crash, which occurred at the interesection of Washington and Prospect Streets.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Those volunteer fire and ambulance workers are still at it.  Its 51 years and they’re still having a ball!  This year’s annual St. Patrick’s weekend celebration is scheduled for Saturday, March 13th.
 Among the 7,000 colorful racers competing in the 27th annual American Birkebeiner held in nearby Hayward was a familiar face from the Thorp area.  This year wasn’t the first time that avid cross country skier, teacher, and Clark County District 13 Supervisor, Sylvia Oberle, donned her skis and race number to compete in the famous race.
