100 Years Ago (1910)

Stanley Sunbeams – Stanley now has a closely organized Civic League of about seventy-five members, the object of which is to enforce the liquor laws and if possible do away with saloons in the city of Stanley.
 
The following persons have been named as census enumerators for the towns in this vicinity: Thorp Village and Thorp Town – H. C. Tiedeman; Worden – Wallace Landry; Reseburg – Corliss Colby; Withee – Ignatz Przybylski; Mead and Warner – Ed Einfeldt; Hixon – Ole C. Anderson; Longwood – Chas. Buss.
 
Worden Wavelets – Our weather lately has stopped the people in the community from making maple sugar and syrup.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
Goggle Eye News – Mr. Papierniak covered part of his mail route with his car on Thursday.  It being the first time he has been able to go through here with the car since the early part of the winter closed the roads to cars.
 
S. S. Warner, Thorp’s only surviving veteran of the Civil War, and pioneer citizen was 89 years old on Monday, April 1st, 1935.
 
Butler Items – Joe Shoemaker, who has been at a CCC camp for the past 6 months, has returned home.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Fire caused by an exploding oil space heater destroyed the dwelling, clothing and personal effects of the Robert Schultze family, Route 1, Withee, Saturday evening.
 
Lillian Przybylski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Przybylski of Thorp, won the public speaking contest sponsored by the Minneapolis Bank Association.
 
Fire of an undetermined origin destroyed the Dubiak Body Shop at the intersection of Highway 64 and 73 north of Thorp, in the Town of Roosevelt, about 10 o’clock Friday evening.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
The Thorp High School faculty has chosen Janelle Wincek to represent Thorp High School in quest of one of twelve $1500 statewide scholarships given by the Wisconsin State Telephone Foundation.
 
Daryl Braatz, Thorp FBLA advisor, reported to the Courier that three of the 126 balloons used in the FBLA Week kick-off in February have been returned to Thorp High school.  All three were found in Alma Center, about 50 miles from Thorp.
 
A small group of Thorp School District residents gathered in the multi-purpose room at Thorp High School Monday night to listen to the three candidates running for school board debate the issues.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
 
Area Equipment, Inc. of Thorp was recognized as one of North America’s top volume Gehl farm equipment dealers in 1999.
 
Thorp Public Library patrons will soon have access to an expanded book collection. The Thorp library is connecting with other libraries in the Wisconsin Valley Library Service Area to share resources.
 
Rosewood Villa Retirement Center held their ribbon cutting ceremony and hosted an open house this past Friday and Saturday.
 
The Thorp American Legion Cecil Tormey Post #118 celebrated its 81st birthday last Saturday, March 25.
