100 Years Ago (1910)

John Hayes is about to withdraw from the management of the Arlington Hotel.  Jas Norton is to be his successor.
 
The large furniture factory at Neillsville was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night.
 
Seam was turned on at the dry kilns of the Thorp Mfg. Co. on Monday last, and all the piping was found perfect in every joint.
 
Dr. Selden is finishing his large residence in fine order, both inside and outside.
 
About 3 a.m. on Friday morning last a fire alarm was sounded, the saloon building owned and occupied by Vincent Izydorek being found a mass of flames.  The store building of Frank Switalski, next to the saloon, also caught fire.  The saloon building being entirely destroyed and the store building about half burned.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)

 
Alex Neiman has been serving Mail Route No. 2 this week during the absence of Louis Papierniak who is taking his vacation.
 
John Probosky, transferred here from Stanley, is the new helper at the Soo Line railroad station here.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Local cheese factories paid 32.5 cents per lb. for butterfat June 17.
 
H. T. Jalling has moved his store contents and fixtures three doors south of his present location, into the former bakery building, which has been remodeled and renovated for his entry.
 
Frank Vander Wegen of Withee purchased the general store at Clark, of Fred Warns, last week and will take possession July 15th.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Thorp Orbits – As we toured around our area town roads this week, we noticed about the only thing that will be knee high by the Fourth of July will be the weeds.
 
We read a lot about these hot rods but haven’t seen many around town.  Seems the Thorp area is going back the other way.  Around here if you want to be “hip to the jive”, it’s a horse or pony you scare the pedestrians with.
 
Pete Larson, who operates a feed mill here for his father, had his arm broken early Wednesday when it got caught in a drive belt.
 
Hank Lutz of Thorp won the Frist Annual Medalist Tournament held June 25 and 26 at Owen’s Meadowview Golf Club.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Irv and Audrey Kreutz are the new owners of the Cardinal Court Motel in Thorp, taking over June 10th.
 
The Thorp Police Department took delivery of a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria squad car on June 5th.  After being fitted with a new blue and red light bar to meet state requirements, plus a scanner, siren and decals; the car started full-time patrol Dairy Days weekend.
 
Elected as the new President of the TBA was Danny Welgos, owner of Thorp IGA.  Jim Bix was elected 1st Vice President, and his wife Ginny was elected Secretary.  Dwight Isenberger was elected 2nd Vice President and Mary Stroinski was elected Treasurer.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)

 
Carolyn Voelker, from Thorp competed in the 400 meter run, earning 2nd place and also in the 800 meter run with a time of 3:23:1, finishing first at this year’s Special Olympics Wisconsin 2000 State Summer Games in Stevens Point.
