100 Years Ago (1891)

A number of Indians are hunting in this vicinity.

Tim Horan went into camp on the North Fork with a crew of men on Monday.

Mike Denney has gone into camp with a crew north of here for the Sterling Lumber Company.

The Village of Boyd is taking steps to incorporate and will hold its election to decide upon the matter in a few days.

Born to R. Perkins and wife of Sterling, on Oct. 18th, a son: to Mr. and Mrs. Baker, of this village, on same date, a son.

R. A. Burss lost two cows last week in a peculiar manner.  He had emptied an old salt pork barrel and the cows ate of the salt and drank the brine, dying soon after.  Another one of his cows, in trying to jump a wire fence on Saturday last, lacerated herself so badly that she will have to be killed.

75 Years Ago

Worden – Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Hans Schultz on Monday, October 30th, a daughter.

Henry Labutzke sold his cheese factory in the Town of Reseburg recently to E. W. Ehlert, who took possession last week.  Mr. and Mrs. Labutzke departed for their former home at Kiel on Wednesday last.

Bernard Roth and Stephen Snyder went to Chicago last week where they have secured employment.

Ronald Connor, Bernard Elmendorf and Chas. Theil went to Madison on Monday to attend the course in cheese making at the University.

Married at Greenwood, on Oct. 30th Miss Marie J. Kuntz to Mr. Burton A. Leatherdale.  The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kuntz, of Thorp.

Victoria, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moore of Stanley, was united in marriage to Bernard Slota at Duluth on Monday of this week.

Hansen & Zaborowski Imp Co. local agents for Ford cars received six last week all of which were turned over to purchasers.

E. L. Snyder left for Rearville, Alberta, Canada on Tuesday last where he will make an extended visit with his sister, Mrs. Vina Howard.

Melvin Boardman, Frank Miles, John Bogumill, Jos. Walsdorf, R. J. Brunner, Prof. Lasher, Ross Lawrence, C. W. Wolf and R. H. Tolford motored to Loyal on Saturday evening last to hear Robert M. LaFollette speak.  It is reported that all got their money’s worth of unadulterated democratic doctrine.

A very pretty wedding took place at Owen, Saturday, October 29th, when Miss Esther Wolter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Wolter, was married to Mr. Lynn Hodnett, of Wolter’s Corners.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Sargent of Owen.

Mrs. Frances Smith, 66, widow of the late James Smith, suffered a paralytic stroke upon retiring at her home Thursday night last and as a result died at an early hour on Saturday morning.

50 Years Ago

Joe Nelson, 45, was found dead Tuesday afternoon by Joe Schmidt on the A. Huls farm located two miles west and one mile north of Thorp.  He died of exposure.

A beautiful fall wedding was solemnized, October 25th, at St. Mary’s Church, Milwaukee, when, Miss Monica Mokwa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mokwa, Milwaukee became the bride of Walter Wolowik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wolowik, Greenwood. 

A pretty wedding was solemnized at the St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church on Wednesday morning, October 29th, when Miss Ann Herman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Herman, became the bride of Hermiss Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Schmidt.

Roger Creek – News comes from Eugene, Oregon, of the death of Orlando Storey at the age of 77 years.  Deceased lived at Eidsvold in the old saw mill days and was married there to Miss Cora Fellows, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Fellows, of Thorp.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Norysiewicz of the Town of Withee, Sunday, Nov. 2nd.

James Eugene Much, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Much, was baptized Sunday at the Lutheran Parsonage.

Miss Margaret Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Rusch, and a graduate of the Thorp High School, recently passed the Wisconsin state board examinations for Registered Nurse.

25 Years Ago

The Grand Opening of Montgomery Ward Catalog Sales Agency in Thorp, Ray Czech, manager, is scheduled to start Thursday morning for three days event.

Miss Rosalie Zdrojkowski, daughter of the Joe Zdrojkowski’s of route 2, Thorp and Mr. Ronald Zurakowski, son of the Lawrence Zurakowski’s route 3, Thorp, received their academic attire at Mount Senario College, Ladysmith, recently as part of Parents’ Day at MSC.

Saturday, at 1:15 p.m., the Fire Dept. was called to Joe Kosik farm, three miles south of Thorp, where their barn was destroyed by fire.

Private Donald R. Nye, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Nye, thorp, completed a supply specialist course Oct. 20 at the Army Quartermaster School, Ft. Lee, VA.

Sunday dinner was at the Ed Alger home in honor of the baptism of their grandson, Charles Kenneth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Maier of Green Bay.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Deutschlander are the proud parents of a baby girl, born on October 30th.  The baby is named Lori Lynn and weighed six pounds and six ounces.

Dan’s Meat Market – Ground Beef 39˘ lb.

White satin bows were on the pews and vases of white gladiolas and pom poms were on the altar of St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sheboygan for the marriage ceremony of Kay Judith Sanville and Gerald John Bizjak on Saturday, October 8th.

Basket of Yellow and white gladiolas with miniature mums decorated the First Presbyterian Church of Stanley for the wedding of Velma Jane Malinowski and Kenneth Louis Kiraly on August 27, 1966.

Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rogalski celebrated their Golden Anniversary, Saturday, October 29th.

White Birch – Mr. and Mrs. John Kott are the proud parents of a baby boy, born Saturday.

Happy Hollow – Word was received here on Thursday of the birth of a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Vilas Kuehl of route 1, Augusta.

Mary Mamajek, 94, passed away at Stanley Hospital of old age Saturday, October 22nd.

Gilman Locals – Miss Bonnie Kornesczuk who teaches in Wis. Rapids spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Mary Kornesczuk and family.

Spring Valley – A large shed is being completed on the farm of Don Smasal by Joe Lato’s crew of Thorp.
