100 Years Ago (1891)

Quite Spring like during the past week!

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Neuman, of Sterling, on the 12th inst.

R. A. Burss killed two bears south of town one day last week, and brought them in on Tuesday.

Theodore Feltz, of Cadott, has taken the position of foreman at J. W. Cirkel & Sons factory here, made vacant by the removal to Boyd of Chris Zapp.

An election was held at Boyd on Tuesday, and the citizens decided to have it incorporated as a village.  The vote stood 63 for and 13 against.

Bert Tolford, for the past year employed as bookkeeper by the Garrison Mercantile Co. has accepted a similar position with J. W. Cirkel & Sons and commenced work at their office on Monday last.

The little son of Geo. B. Parkhill yanked a burning lamp off the table at his home on Saturday evening last nearly causing a serious fire.  But a small amount of damage resulted, although it was a narrow escape.

Married at the residence of Chas Cordes, in this village, on Friday, Nov. 20th, by Geo. B. Parkhill, J. P. was Mr. Jno G. Bodenforfer to Miss Emma Gessert, both of Marshfield.

75 Years Ago

Eidsvold – Married Dec. 4th at the bride’s home, Mrs. Effie Flora to Benj. Webb of Elroy.

A bouncing baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Broeren on Thanksgiving Day.

The marriage of Miss Mayme Deachamp and Melvin Parkhill of this village is reported to have taken place at Abbotsford on Saturday last.

Tuesday of last week marked the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Koslowski, of the Town of Withee.  The wedding was the first one to take place in the new St. Hedwig Church located two miles east of this village.

The coal situation was relieved here last week by the receipt of several car loads.

The remains of Mrs. Catherine Schmidt, who died at her home at Milwaukee on Saturday, last arrived here on Tuesday morning for burial.  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Schultz of this village.

50 Years Ago

Mr. James Caterina Jr., of Thorp and Miss Mary Culligan, of LaGrange, Ill., were united in marriage at the church of St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange on Saturday morning, Nov. 22.

Real Indian Summer weather has been experienced here for the past week and farmers are catching up with their plowing which was held back by the wet fall.

A baby boy, Edwin Norbert, arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Wegner on November 24th.

West Worden – Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gruber, Nov. 19, twins, a boy and girl.

North Hillside – Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, Wednesday, Nov. 19, a baby boy.   They named him Cleo Martin.

East of Gilman – Miss Gertrude V. Walczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Walczyk, of Chicago, and Mr. John Kollar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kollar, of Chicago, were united in marriage at Sts Peter and Paul’s Church, Gilman, on Saturday, Nov. 22nd.

Neiman’s Corner – Fire of unknown reason destroyed the Town Line Cheese factory belonging to Ed. Witt last Wednesday forenoon.

25 Years Ago

Arlene Zielanis, Thorp, a Stout State University student, is one of 11 Wisconsin 4-H Club members who have been granted $3,600 in scholarship awards.

A Thorp man is believed to have died instantly Saturday when a tree fell on him in the Town of Hallie.  John A. Hazuga, 60, route 2, Thorp was assisting a son-in-law, Charles Lien, in logging work at the rural Chippewa Falls farm.

Services for Anna Zakrzewicz, 76, Thorp, were held Monday morning in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin.

Fire of undetermined origin late Sunday afternoon destroyed a barn on the farm of Ed Schunk Jr., in Worden township, 8 ˝ miles southwest of Thorp, killing 34 head of milk cows and a number of head of young livestock.

Born: to Mr. and Mrs. John Bolf of Hanover Park, Ill., a 7 pound 3 oz. daughter, Laura Marie, on Nov. 18.  Grand-parents are: Mrs. Catherine Bolf at Owen, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Hoffman of Thorp.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert J. Voelker are rejoicing over the birth of a daughter, Lori Jo, the 28th of November, weight 6 lbs. 4 oz.

Frank Switalski, died of a brief illness Nov. 1, 1966, at St. Catherine’s Hospital, Kenosha.  He was born in Thorp, Wis. on Dec. 22, 1900.

Mrs. Margaret J. Dreger, 90, route 4, Chippewa Falls, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Walter Traven (Travinski), 69, Pacific, Wash., were held in the Lightle Chapel, Auburn, Wash. with burial in the Auburn cemetery.

Anna Persok, 68, of Gilman passed away, Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Stanley Hospital after a short illness.

Rudolph Lund, 68, Stanley, died Monday in Victory Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.

Stanley Memorial Hospital Births – November 17, 1966 a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Kotecki, route 1, Thorp.
