100 Years Ago (1893)

The “Village of Thorp” is proper now.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Banderob on May 27.
 
The Couirer (Courier) is pleased to extend congratulations to Ole Samulson, chairman of the Town of Thorp, who was united in marriage to Miss Tillie Dahl, by Rev. Tharaldson, at Chippewa Falls, on the 17th ult.
 
Peter Hipke has one of the cub bears recently captured by C. C. Clark and Wm. Black at his saloon, which is a source of great amusement.  Pete has already trained the bear to strike a John L. attitude and cuff anything in his way.
 
Wm. Simerson went up on the headwaters of Black on Saturday with a crew of men and will be engaged for a couple of months in landing stray logs into the river and repairing booms and improving the river generally for next year’s drive.
 
Commencement exercises of the high school will be held at Hipke & Gerbing’s hall on Monday evening next, June 5.  The graduates this year number five as follows: Albert Adams, Ernest Barrett, Julia Garrison, Henry Howard, and Clarence McKee.
 
The election held on Friday last on the question of incorporating this village resulted in a decisive victory for those in favor of incorporating.  The whole number of votes cast was 138, of which 120 ready “yes” and 18 “no”.
 
Stanley Sunbeams—John Hall of Boyd is building a 20x30 structure near the Lytle House in which he intends opening a saloon in July next.  H. Henrickson is also building a large business structure in the same vicinity into which he intends moving his general store business.
 
75 Years Ago (1918)

 
Leon Fischer returned home on Saturday last from the hospital at Chippewa Falls where he underwent an opearation (operation) for appendicitis.
 
Mrs. Lillian Stracker, who is taking a training school course for nurses at Milwaukee, is spending a few days at the home of her parents here.
 
Mrs. James Connor and children moved to Grand Rapids, Wis., on Monday where they expect to make their home.
 
50 Years Ago (1943)

 
On Tuesday evening, May 25, at the N. R. R. Lutheran Church was the scene of a very pretty wedding when Adelyn C. Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson exchanged nuptial vows with William E. Krause.
 
Saturday morning, June 5th, at 9:30 o’clock at the altar of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, Wis., Miss Frances T. Neiman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Neiman of Thorp, became the bride of S/Sgt. Leon M. Moczarny, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Moczarny of Thorp.
 
A very pretty wedding was solemnized Saturday, May 29th, at 5 o’clock in the afternoon at St. James Church, Chicago, when Miss Helen Poczontiek became the bride of Mr. Henry Sobolewski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Sobolewski, of Thorp.
 
Word was received here that Helen Rataiczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Rataiczyk, became the bride of Sgt. Edward B. Mateja at St. Joan of Arc Church in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 23.
 
Sgt. Allen Mathews, of Eau Claire, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mathews of the Town of Taft, was wounded in action in North Africa on April 5, 1943, and died the same day.
 
Word was received Monday by Mr. and Mrs. Bart Wolek, of Bellinger, of the death of their son, Frank, who was killed in the defense of his country.
 
Last rites were conducted by Rev. Sprengler, pastor of the Ev. Lutheran Church, for Mrs. Ottilia Delis, at the Thorp Funeral Home on Monday, June 7th.
 
25 Years Ago (1968)

 
The Silver Dollar tavern down in the metropolis of Reseburg has been purchased by Tom Kuester, son of the man about Reseburg, Elmer Kuester.
 
Edward Maslowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Maslowski, route 1 Thorp, was among 415 June graduates at Wisconsin State University –Stevens Point.
 
John Pawlowski, 82, passed away at his home in the Town of Roosevelt, Taylor County on Sunday evening, June 2nd.
 
A baby girl, Marcia A, weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz., arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Przesmicki of Wausau, on Sunday, May 19th.
 
A son, Mark John weighing 9 lbs. 15 oz., was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jaworek, May 24th.
 
John T. Miller, 90, Owen died Tuesday at the Memorial Home in Neillsville.
 
Stanley Memorial Hospital Births: May 24, 1968, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Niedzwiecki, route 3, Thorp; May 25, 1968, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Felix Straszkowski, route 2, Thorp.
 
William Blazel, 77, of Wisconsin Rapids, died Friday morning.
 
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home in Owen for John Rohland, 61, route 2, Withee, who died Wednesday at the Bethel Convalescent Home in Arpin.
 
Basil Joseph Harycki, 78, passed away at Stanley Memorial Hospital, on Monday, May 20 of a lingering illness.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Wilczek of Chippewa Falls, Wis., are the proud parents of a daughter born May 27.  The little miss weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and is named Nancy Marie.
 
The Altar of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Boyd, was decorated with bouquets of yellow mums and white glads when Shirley Burmeister became the bride of Harold M. Homan, on Saturday, May 18th.
 
Barbara Zaborowski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zaborowski of Thorp, received her Bachelor of Education Degree in Secondary Education from Wisconsin State University, Whitewater on May 26, 1968.
 
The Methodist Church, a familiar name in Thorp since 1939, exists no more.  With the Evangelical United Brethren Church, it is now a part of a new Protestant denomination, The United Methodist Church.
 
Diane Marie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stroinski was baptized Saturday afternoon, June 1, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Breezy Hill—Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Alger drove to Green Bay a week ago Sunday to the Kenneth Maier home, where they attended the baptism of their new grandson, Mary Edmund.
 
Vases of gladiolus and carnations were on the main altar of St. Mary’s Polish National Church, Lublin for the marriage of Miss Carol Mae Ruda and Buford Lee Burns on Saturday, May 11.
