100 Years Ago (1895)

John McGrogan expects to harvest about 2,200 bushels of potatoes from his five acre field.
 
J. T. Agin killed a two year old black bear near his place north of the village on Sunday last.
 
Corn is out of all danger from frost in this vicinity and the quality and quantity beats all previous records.
 
A warehouse where our farmers could dispose of surplus farm products, grain and potatoes, is an institution sadly needed in this village.  Thousands of bushels of grain and potatoes could be purchased here at exceedingly low prices this fall.
 
Miss Alice L. Worden of the Town of Thorp and Edward S. Smith of Longwood, were married at the residence of the bride’s parents by Rev. Bachman on Tuesday.
 
John Landry visited St. Paul last week for the purpose of having an artificial leg fitted.  He returned on Fri. with the new member properly attached.  Jack is now learning to walk and will soon become an expert in handling the new contrivance.
 
Eidsvold – Jacob Jacobson has erected a large barn on his farm near here. – W. H. Vandusen has purchased forty acres of land near here of Nye, Lusk & Hudson. – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gust Strom, last week.
 
75 Years Ago (1920)

 
Worden – Word has been received here announcing the marriage of Miss Frieda Eggers to James Williams of Baltimore, MD on August 7, 1920.
 
Wheeler’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Biddle.
 
John Peeples and Lawrence Barrett have gone to Milwaukee where they will attend Marquette University.
 
Jacob Smith has purchased the sixty acre farm owned by Peter Papierniak on the north side of the village.
 
The marriage of Miss Ann Stroinski and Stephen Dombralski, both of Chicago, took place at St. Hedwig’s Church yesterday morning, Father Korzyk officiating.
 
Mrs. Ernest Moeri, 36, died at the home of her parents in this village on Sat., Sept. 4th after a lingering illness.
 
50 Years Ago (1945)
 
Gilbert Vanderhyden, 84, a resident of this community for many years, died of cardiac failure at the Chippewa Falls Hospital, Sunday, September 9th.
 
Jacob Lockbaum, 85, a Town of Reseburg farmer for many years passed away on Tues. afternoon.
 
Carol Janicki, 4½ year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Janicki, of the Town of Thorp, died at her home, of brain tumor on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Little Eleanore, 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Beyer, of Fifield and former residents of Thorp, was seriously burned Fri. Aug. 31, while playing with matches in the back yard of her home.  She was rushed to the Park Falls hospital, but died the following day.
 
A baby girl, 6 ½ pounds was born to Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Conway at the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield on Wed., September 5th.
 
A son was bon to Mr. and Mrs. Priemeau, of Colby, on Friday at the Marshfield Hospital.  Mrs. Priemeau will be remembered here as Frances Ebben.
 
A very pretty event took place at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Wed. morning, Sept. 5th, when Father Piekarski united in the holy bonds of matrimony, Sgt. Walter Latawiec, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Latawiec, of Chicago and Leona, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rogalski, of Withee.
 
Harvey V. Brandsness S2c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hjalmar Brandsness and Miss Ann Bogumill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Bogumill, of Thorp, were united in marriage in a ceremony performed by Rev. Neises at Rozellville, Wis., on Sept 1st.
 
An unusual event took place at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Thorp last Sat. morning when the Rev. Michael G. Mertens celebrated his first Solemn High Mass.
 
25 Years Ago (1970)

 
Anton Beller, 70, passed away at his home in the Town of Withee, Sat. evening September 5th.
 
Stanley Cutkowski, 74, passed away at Luther Hospital, Eau Clarie, on Friday, September 4th.
 
A former Thorp veterinarian, Dr. Robert Stukel, Jr., 29, of Bloomfield, Nebraska, was killed in Sioux City, Iowa, Tues.  Authorities said it was murder.
 
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Rural Gilman will be observing and celebrating a very special day in their history on Sun. Sept.13, 1970.  It will be the 70th  Anniversary of the founding of their church.
 
Nick Joseph Krupa, 62, resident of Route 2, Thorp, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls September 2nd.
 
10 Years Ago (1985)
 
Thomas A. Boie, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Dean Boie, Route 3, Thorp, was killed early Tues. morning, Sept. 10th, when the car in which he was a passenger left the roadway and went down an embankment.
 
The 1985 Thorp High School Girls Volleyball team, off to any (an) excellent start this year, took home the first championship trophy for a Thorp High Volleyball team by winning the Marathon Tournament Sat. Sept. 7th.
 
Robert Stanley Slovensky, 58, Pittsville, died Sun. Sept. 1, 1985 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Arthur A. Gaffney, 85, Appleton and formerly of Stanley, died Sat. Sept. 7, 1985 at Appleton Medical Center.
