100 Years Ago (1896)

Born: to Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Elmendorf on March 9th, a son.
 
Dr. McKittrick reports a son born to Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Fear of the Town of Thorp on Sat. last.
 
John McGrogan shipped a car containing 700 bushels of potatoes to Chicago on Sat. last and accompanied the car himself.
 
Mrs. Anna, wife of William S. Tufts, age 42 years, died at her home at Withee on Sat. evening last.
 
Married at the M. E. Parsonage on March 10, 1896, by Rev. Bachman, were Mr. Ed. A. Powell and Mrs. Ida Reed, both of the Town of Thorp.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)

 
Mrs. Benjamin Bruno died at her home near Lindsay, Mont., on Fri. Feb. 25th.  The Bruno family resided here for a number of year but left for Montana about twelve years ago.
 
Mrs. Fred Fischer died at her home in this village at an early hour on Mon. morning last after an illness of about ten days duration.
 
The American Legion Basketball Team of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 has been entered in the American Legion tournament to be held at Menomonie on March 17, 18 & 19, and will do their utmost to bring back a few of the honors.  Following is the lineup: Chas. Zachow, K. Tiedeman, Anton Manczuk, S. Gullickson and W. S. Wagner.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)
 
Students and classmates of Barbara Jane Wisniewski, 17 year old high school student of the Withee High School, were shocked as were other friends and relatives, when they learned that the girl had succumbed to a heart attack while awaiting the arrival of the school bus last week.
 
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Irish at the Methodist Church for Elton L. Morris, 65, a former resident of Thorp, who passed away at Chippewa Falls early Tuesday morning.
 
At a nuptial high mass at St. Ann’s Church, Stanley, Wed. morning Feb. 27, Miss Marcella Anna Kastel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kastel, of Stanley, became the bride of Firman Baures, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baures, of Thorp.
 
Charles H. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Johnson, of Taft and Miss Victoria Sperling, daughter of Mrs. Bednarczyk, of Redville, were united in marriage at Savior’s Lutheran Church at Cornell on March 4th.
 
A double ring ceremony united Tech. Fourth Grade Harry V. Osowski, of Thorp and Miss Bernice Barnhill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Barnhill, of Bay, Arkansas in the Holy Bonds of matrimony, Tues. March 5, 1946.
 
A pretty wedding was solemnized by Rev. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Church on Mon. March 4, 1946 when Manette Haas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Haas, of Thorp, became the bride of Zigmund Danielewicz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Danielewicz, of Thorp.
 
A very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lublin on Sat. March 2, when Miss Anna, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sarna of Brownsville, became the bride of Frank, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Burzynski of Thorp.
 
Worden – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Boie on Thurs. March 7th at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield an eight pound boy.  They named him Russell John.
 
Funeral services were conducted from St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee Fri. March 1st for Augusta Roeder Vetterkind.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)

 
Recent graduates of Thorp High School have achieved high marks at the UN. Of Wis., Marathon County campus at Wausau and have been name (named) to the deans list.  The (They) are: Scott Ahles, Jody Pawlak, & Barbara Stanula.
 
Thorp High School graduates enrolled in Stout State University this semester are:  Mary Ann Ghidorzi, James Dobrzynski, Betty Claussen, Betzy Zaborowski, William Badzinski, James Sandel, Alvin Grendzinski, Arlene Leszewski, Joanne Zielanis and Dennis Karnopp.
 
The barn was destroyed by fire on the Delbert Burss farm, about 8 ½ miles south of Thorp in the Town of Butler, Sat. morning.
 
Alan Ehlert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ehlert, Thorp, was on the Dean’s honor list at Wis. State UN, Eau Claire.
 
Services were held Fri. at the Roseberry Funeral Home, Friendship for Mrs. Fred (Anna) Fetting, 80, of rural Greenwood, who died Tues. March 2.
 
Funeral services were held Fri. March 5, at St. Mary’s Church, Lublin, for Andrew Pecka, 88, who passed away Tues. March 2, in Lublin.
 
Steve Czech, 56, passed away at Medford Memorial Hospital, Fri. March 5th.
 
Eva Dubiak Jarmakowicz, 78, passed away Feb. 26, 1971 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Funeral Services for Wasyl Domonczuk, 91, Gilman, a former resident of Lublin, was held Sat. at the Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Lublin.
 
Wells F. Harvey, 92, publisher of the Clark County Press, died Thurs. at the Bay Front Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)
 
The sounds of ammunition going off awakened the Frank Mutchler family Sat. morning, March 8.  The garage behind their home had caught fire, destroying the gun repair business Mutchler operated out of the garage.
 
One need only look at the State Class C girls’ basketball tournament this week to see the Cloverbelt Conference had some good teams this year.  Against such tough competition, the Thorp High School girls’ buckets team finished with a 10-10 record, relying on some young players for most of the season.
