100 Years Ago (1897)

A spell of soft weather is being experienced this week and the snow has almost entirely disappeared.
 
Chas. Buss and Herman Thomsen, proprietors of the creamery at Greenwood, spent Christmas here.
 
A hay barn containing about fifteen tons of hay located on R. Cornwell’s farm south of Eidsvold caught fire in some strange manner on Fri. night last and was totally destroyed with contents.
 
Caesar Barth is engaged on a logging job for Nye, Lusk & Hudson will bank about 600,000 feet of logs in their yards here during the winter if the roads remain in good condition.
 
L. H. McGuire is putting the logs from 200 acres of land, purchased by him last summer, into the south fork of the Eau Claire for the N. W. Lumber Co.  He is also cutting piling and staves.
 
Dr. W. R. McCutcheon purchased C. H. Sheldon’s stock of drugs and medicines on Mon. and will remove the same to his own store building early next month where he will continue the business. The price paid was $1,500.
 
Louise, wife of E. Burkhart, died at the home of her father, John T. Hertel, at Chippewa Falls, of consumption on Sun. last.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Reseburg – Hugo Mattes left for Madison Mon. to take a short course in milk testing. – Caesar Barth has purchased 180 acres of land in the Town of Mead, trading his 20 acres in section 16 in on the deal.
 
Zero weather was experienced and high winds caused many roads to be almost impassable with snow drifts.
 
Two homes, those of Carl Kouda and Mike Zaborowski, are under quarantine for scarlet fever this week.  The cases are reported mild.
 
Mrs. P. McParland and son L. S. McParland went to Glidden on Fri. last where they will visit with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McParland for several days, the latter returning to his school at South Milwaukee on Mon.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Andrew Ciolkosz, 80, passed away at the Chippewa Falls Hospital of old age complications on Dec. 26, 1946.
 
William Oberle, 81, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred J. Schmidt, Thurs. Dec. 26 of old age infirmities.
 
Yellow River – The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Saunders passed away at an Eau Claire hospital on Fri.
 
Word has been received here that Mrs. Vincent Szalkowski passed away at her home in Chicago last week.  She will be remembered as Sophie Wisowaty.
 
Gilman – A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Aloys Van Den Huvel, on Sun. Dec. 22.
 
Rolling Meadows – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Nurmi on Tues. Dec. 24.
 
Butler – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Poppe, of Chicago recently.  Mrs. Poppe was the former Lydia Mayenschein.
 
25 years Ago (1972)

 
Regina Galarowicz, 92, passed away Tues. Dec. 21, at Victory Memorial Nursing Home.
 
Mary Sciezor, Lublin, wife of Thorp Barber, Marion Sciezor, passed away suddenly at her home Wed. Dec. 22.
 
Mrs. George W. (Helen) Hansen, 90, Abbotsford, died Mon. at the Marshfield Convalescent Center.
 
Lewis H. Moore, 87, of Owen, formerly of Boyd, passed away Sun. at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Szymanski of West Salem are the happy parents of an adopted baby girl.  She was born Nov. 30th.
 
Miss Patricia Ann Kopacz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Kopacz, Greenwood, was giving (given) in marriage by her father to Robert Kauhiokalani Corpuz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Corpuz, Hawaii, on Sat. Nov. 13, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Ruth Albert, 60, Thorp, died Fri. evening, Dec. 26, 1986 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Peoples Exchange Bank Executive Vice President and Cashier, Robert Olson is retired as of Jan 1, completing 27 years of service.
 
Former Owen resident, Marion J. Fritz, 64, Thorp, died Sun. Dec. 21, 1986 at the Thorp Care Center.
 
Theresa L. Cieslek, 81, (nee Pietrzek) Berwyn, IL, died Tues. Dec. 23rd.
