100 Years Ago (1897)

The Courier appears this week in a handsome new dress of type which will no doubt be appreciated by our readers.  This improvement has been contemplated for some time, but owing to the stringency of the money market it has been an impossibility to make the change sooner.
 
The attendance at the village caucus held on Sat. afternoon last numbered about forty voters.  The old officers were re-nominated as follows: Pres.-W. R. McCutcheon; For Trustees-P. McKittrick, H. Banderob, N. P. Hansen, M. Wiltgen, L. Johnson, Geo. Zillman; For Treasurer-Chr. Tiedeman; For Clerk-Geo. Burke; For Assessor-Max Weber; For Marshal- L. N. Jones: For Supervisor-R. R. Wiley; For Justice of the Peace-H. Holzhausen; For Police Justice-Mat Kaudy; For Constable-I. N. Jones.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
South Point Vicinity – Stanley Lasuik has sold his share of their farm, to his brother John Lasuik.  Consideration twenty-five hundred dollars
 
Neiman’s Corner – A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. I. Wojtkiewicz, March 20th.
 
Mis Katherine Terlikowski, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Terlikowski, was taken to the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls for an operation for appendicitis after which she was brought home dead on the Sunday noon train.
 
Thorp High School Notes – Russell Lindquist has been elected Valedictorian (the pupil having the highest average in their four years of high school work) with average of 92.89 per cent.  William Schmidt has been elected Salutatorian (the pupil receiving the second highest average with an average of 91.55 per cent.  The other pupils of honorable mention are James Tolford with an average of 91.13 per cent and Margaret Hansen with an average of 91.05.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo P. Fischer on Mon.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Jaeger on Thurs. March 23rd.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Herman on Sun. March 25th.
 
Andrew Heiman has purchased the Aug. Fleege farm west of the village and took possession the first of the week.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Michael Bienasc, Lublin, died at his home Thurs. morning.  Funeral services were held Sat. morning at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lublin.
 
Mrs. Pete VanDinter, 38, passed away in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Appleton on Tues. morning.  Mrs. VanDinter will be remembered here as Janet Fischer.
 
Fire which broke out about 4:00 Sat. morning, destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Winarczyk northwest of Thorp, and the family barely escaped with their lives.
 
Mitterhoffer – Word was received of the death of Nick Congemi, of Waukesha.  Mrs. Nick Congemi is the former Isabel Swim.
 
John H. Johnson, 82, a resident of this community for 52 years, passed away at his home in the Town of Thorp on March 30, 1947.
 
Yellow River – Word has been received here of the birth of a daughter to Dr. and Mrs. Donald Egan on March 25th at their home in Massachusetts.  Mrs. Egan will be remembered as Lucille Olson.
 
Miss Arline L. Ehlert, Town of Thorp and Joseph F. Zwijacz, Town of Roosevelt, were married on Sat. March 22, by E. J. Neuenschwander, Taylor County Judge.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Tomczak had their baby baptized on Sunday and she was named Kathleen Ann.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Bert Hubbard, 84, died at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley Tues. March 28, 1972.
 
John Koperski, 96, passed away at Havenett Nursing Home, Owen, on Mon. March 27th.
 
The body of Mrs. Ed. Gregorich, 49, Greenwood was discovered Sat. morning along the bank of the Black River near Greenwood.
 
The Silver Beaver, Scout Award, highest award a council can bestow to a volunteer leader for service to boyhood was presented to Joseph Keating, Thorp the past week.
 
Reseburg – Mrs. Norman (Lorraine Frese) Trohanov of Portsmouth, Rhode Island recently met her cousin, Delbert Lussenden, who she hasn’t seen for fifteen years.  Mr. Trohanov and Mr. Lussenden are together in the Navy there.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Loren Joseph, son of Cindy and Jim Alger was baptized Sun. March 29, 1987 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Church.
 
The North Central Technical Institute Business Skills Contest was held in Wausau, March 25, and Thorp Students did well.  They were: Kim Harycki placed forth (fourth) in Beginning Typing, Bill Verkuilen placed third in Accounting and third in Business Math.
 
Roger Creek – Wed. Ethel and Mike Krupa received word of the birth of their fifth great-granddaughter, Alya Marie Stangret, daughter of Brian and Lori Stangret of Waconia, MN, grandparents are Jerome and Kay Stangret, was born Wed. March 25.
 
Melani Galarowicz, daughter of Ed and Charlotte Polnaszek of Thorp, has been promoted at Northwest Bank and Trust Co., Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa.  Galarowicz has been promoted to loan administration officer. 
 
David A. Kile, who is in the Wyoming National Guard, Battery C, 1st Battalion, has recently been promoted to Sgt.
 
Julianna Kmieciak, daughter of Raymond and Judith Kmieciak of Thorp, has successfully completed her training in Cosmetology at Model College of Hair Design in St. Cloud, MN.
