100 Years Ago (1897)

Thos. Steele Sr. has been appointed Village Marshal by the board of trustees, in place of L. N. Jones, resigned.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tiedeman on May 7th; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Welch on May 8th.
 
A lodge of Royal Neighbors was organized here on Thurs. evening of last week.  It is evidently a secret society as we have been unable to secure a list of the officers installed.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Town Line – Oscar Evenson, son of Mrs. Abi Tunison, and Luellamay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Cornwell, all of Buckhorns, Taylor County, were married at the Presbyterian Manse in Stanley, April 29th.
 
Ferd Kleuchner is erecting a new residence on his small farm north of the village, 26x28 feet in size.
 
A nine pound boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jno. A. Papierniak of the Town of Withee on Sun. May 7th.
 
St. Bernard’s Catholic Congregation has purchased three new bells to place in the steeple of St. Bernard’s Church.  The bells are manufactured at St. Louis, Mo., and will arrive about June 1st. The largest bell weighs 1,500 lbs. and the others weigh 800 and 460 lbs. respectively and are timed in F., A., and C.  The weights given are exclusive of hangings.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Funeral services were held at the St. Hedwig’s Church on Wed. morning for Peter Trybowski, 79, who passed away at his home on May 10, 1947 and John Oleksiewicz, 88, who died on May 11, 1947.  Both were farmers in the Town of Reseburg.
 
Word has been received here of the death of Vivian Tiedemann Garvue at her home in Milwaukee on Sat. evening, May 10th.  A heart attack was the cause of death.
 
Butler – A son Nicholas was born on Thurs. evening to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Klapatauskas.
 
Yellow River – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Merton Johnson on May 4th at the Victory Hospital in Stanley.
 
Gilman – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Oberle on Sat.
 
Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Jarocki entertained relatives and friends at a dinner on Sun. last in honor of their new daughter who was christened.  The baby was named Virginia Diane.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)

 
Joseph Zaszczurynski, 56, died Fri. May 5th suddenly in the Town of Roosevelt, rural Lublin.
 
Anna Petrulis, 73, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Mon. afternoon May 8th.
 
Doreen Osowski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Osowski, has been chosen as one of two recipients in Wis. for the Elinor Shagger Memorial Award.
 
Congrats to Corky Christiansen, both he and his wife, Ann, were honored by the Clark County Male Chorus at Neillsville Sat. evening.  He was presented a plaque depicting 25 years of service with the chorus, formerly the Thorp Male Chorus.  He’s the last member of this former local group.
 
Reseburg – Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frese were among those who attended the baptismal reception in honor of Lori Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Frese at Withee on Sat. night. – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Krause a baby girl, Michelle on May 3rd at Minneapolis.  The proud grandparent is Katherine Lato of Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
Peter Van Calcar, formerly of Johnson creek, Wis. is Thorp’s new Director of Public Works.
 
A Gilman man was killed early Fri. morning, May 8 in a single car accident in the Taylor County, Town of Aurora.  According to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department, Leonard J. Przybylski, 56, was west bound on STH 64 just west of CTH H when the vehicle he was driving went onto the right shoulder of the road, hit a mailbox, then skidded across the highway into the left ditch.  The car rolled over several times.  Przybylski was thrown from the vehicle into a tree.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
Olivia Kathryn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Pszeniczny, Jr. was baptized Sun. May 10, 1987 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Church. 
 
Clara Brunke, 64, Chicago died Thurs. May 7, 1987 in the hospital where she has been a patient the past eleven months.
 
Mr. Raymond J. Gengler, 72, Lakeland, Florida, died Tues. May 5, 1987, at his home.
 
Mary Horounziak, 75, Route 2, Thorp, died Thurs. May 7, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Edwin M. Trawicki, 73, Route 1, Gilman, died Sun. Evening, May 3, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
