100 Years Ago (1897)

Farmers have all completed seeding and planting is well under way.
 
Dan Kennedy came up from Neillsville on Sunday last and attended church services in the evening.
 
Dr. Karl Doege and wife, of Marshfield, visited here on Sun. last with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Doege.
 
T. O. Mosher has sold to farmers in this vicinity in the neighborhood of seventy-five McCormick machines, including all kinds, which will be delivered to the purchasers here on June 10th.
 
Miss Theresa Kleckner and Louis Banderob were united in marriage at the residence of the bride’s parents in the Town of Withee yesterday morning by Rev. Frydrohowicz, pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church.
 
150 bushels of potatoes, in ten bushel lots for $1; also beans at 25¢ per peck, $1 per bushel Call at J. Kromberg’s farm.  Jorgen Jorgenson
 
The Sherbek show exhibited here on Mon. and gave good satisfaction to all attending.  Of course it isn’t a stupendous aggregation like Barnum’s neither does the cost to attend aggregate as much.

A daughter was born on Monday to Mr. and Mrs. R. Briggs.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Manicki on Mon. May 15th.
 
Chas Albert recently purchased a lot from Dr. W. G. Riopella and is preparing to erect a building thereon to be used for store and dwelling purposes.
 
Mrs. Michael Bonczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Konieczny, of the Town of Withee, died at the hospital at Chippewa Falls on Sun. May 14th after an illness of several weeks with pneumonia.
 
Miss Taleda McCarthy, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben McCarthy, died at the home of her parents in this village on Tues. evening, May 9th.
 
Mrs. Carl Jaeger, 24, died at the hospital at Chippewa Falls on Sat. May 13th, after a short illness.

Jerry Glasshof, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Glasshof, senior has been chosen from the Junior Class to represent Thorp High School at Badger Boys State at Ripon from June 21 to 28.  He is sponsored by the Cecil Tormey Post of Thorp.
 
White Birch – Stanley Cukla purchased a 120 acre farm near Withee recently and moved out of the Soda farm last week.
 
Taft – A daughter was born May 1st to Mr. and Mrs. Throngard, of Minneapolis.  Mrs. Throngard was formerly Alice Holm.
 
Roger Creek – T. J. Germanson purchased the Wm. Blazel Cheese Factory and took possession last Thurs.
 
Walter Oryszczyn, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Oryszczyn, of Thorp, and Miss Olga Leshuk, daughter of Sam Leshuk, of Lublin, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony in a ceremony performed, Sat. morning, May 3rd at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church at Lublin.
 
Word reaches us that Mr. and Mrs. Steven Krych are the proud parents of a baby boy, born on Tues. May 13th, at Chicago, IL.
 
Funeral services were held in Stanley, Sat. afternoon for William Bowie, 86, who passed away of old age infirmities at the home of his niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Peet in Stanley.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)

 
An 11 year old Thorp girl has won a merit citation in the American Automobile Assoc. 28th National School Traffic Safety Poster Contest.  She is Jill Hampton of Thorp Catholic School.
 
Al Lis, formerly of the Town of Taft here, director for Management Information Systems was presented an AMC Commendation Plaque by Col. Ralph C. Robinson during staff meeting March 21.
 
Joseph F. Kolak, 74, Kewaunee, died Wed. May 3, 1972 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Mary O’Kelly, 89, Morgan Plaza, Thorp, died Wed. May 13, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Catherine Skalecki, Morgan Plaza, Thorp, died at her home on Fri., May 15, 1987.
 
Sadie Thompson, 92, Stanley, died Tues. may 12, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Ignatus Pietrzak, 82, Route 3, Stanley, Town of Thorp, died Mon. May 11, 1987 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Two area musicians performed at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Music Department’s jazz combo’s presentation May 10.  Dennis Nye, a freshman from Thorp played bass, and Randy Smasal, a freshman from Withee, played tenor sax in a combo.
 
Eric, Cory, Brandon, Jesse and Shane proudly announce the birth of their new brother, Jordan George Albert.  He was born April 28, 1987 at Luther Hospital.  His parents are Jerome and Catherine Jeske, Thorp.
 
Deborah L. Przybylski, Medford, exchanged marriage vows with Douglas L. Brost, Medford on Sat. April 25, 1987 at Community United Church, Medford.
