100 Years Ago (1897)

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Lee on Sat. morning, Dr. McKittrick in attendance.
 
Harry Aucutt has secured the contract for painting the water tower, hydrants, etc, on his bid of $38 for doing the work.
 
Chas Kuehl has gone to Withee to take charge of the store which L. O. Garrison has opened in the Tufts building at that place.  Charlie is one of the most competent and trusty men to be found anywhere and we bespeak for the enterprise a large measure of success.
 
Mark Hanna is beginning to worry over the next winter’s coal supply.  A few of his customers at Thorp are also wondering how they are going to keep warm.  Our sympathies are with the strikers this time and we sincerely hope that they will effect a settlement with the board trust that will enable them to live and support their families.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Eidsvold – Born to Mr. and Mrs. A. Whitaker on Fri. morning a baby boy.
 
Lewis W. Cattanach was named as the new postmaster at Owen last week to succeed W. A. Watson whose term expired last Jan.
 
A little son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Kiel, aged five years, was instantly killed in an auto accident on the road a short distance north of Bellinger on Mon. evening.
 
School Census 1922 – Thorp Village: Boys 111, Girls 128, Total 239; Thorp Town: Boys 41, Girls 33, Total 74: Withee Town: Boys 27, Girls 21, Total 48; Reseburg Town: Boys 3, Girls 3, Total 6.  Between the ages of 7 and 14 years, Boys 76, Girls 72, total 148.  Between 7 and 16 years, Boys 20 and Girls 33, Total 53
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Harvey Ebben, 46, machinist for the Blue Moon Foods, Inc., here was killed instantly Sat. night at about ten o’clock when a panel truck in which he was a passenger left the road about one and one-half miles east of the Boyd corner on Highway 29, and crashed.  A skull fracture was the cause of death.
 
William E. Joyce, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Joyce Sr., of Greenwood and Miss Olga Kohniak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kohniak, of Withee, were united in holy matrimony at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church at Lublin, July 6, 1947.
 
A seven pound, ten ounce baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Welzien on July 15th at the Victory Hospital in Stanley.
 
A beautiful wedding took place in Chicago, Ill., on Sat. June 28th at the Holy Cross Church, when Miss Bernice Urban, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Urban, of Thorp, became the bride of Mr. Stanley Stegwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Stegwell, of Chicago.
 
Gilman – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Burtard Sun. July 13th.  Mrs. Burtard will be remembered as Lorraine Romfoe. – News received of the death of the infant daughter, Carolyn Ann, of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Piasecki of Rhinelander.  Mrs. Piasecki will be remembered as Sylvia Herman.
 
Last rites for Mrs. Mary Bednarz, 60, of Lublin, were held Tues. morning, July 15th from St. Stanislaus Church in Lublin.
 
25 years Ago (1972)
 
Lawrence Stuttgen, 28, Colby, was killed Sun. when the motorcycle he was operating collided with a pick-up truck.
 
The following person was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for academic achievement during the spring semester; Donna M. Meyer a sophomore majoring in physical education.
 
Lone Oak – News has been received that Frank Gronek of Chicago died suddenly of a heart attack this past week.
 
Rev. Will Grelle performed the marriage ceremony for Joan Marie Lato and Fred Michael Petke on Sat. July 8th, at St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp.
 
The Naval Academy Chapel, Annapolis, Maryland, was the setting on Fri. June 9, as wedding vows were exchanged by Miss Terry Theirl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Theirl, Stanley, and Ensign Robert E. Cattanach Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Cattanach Sr., Neillsville.
 
Rev. Will Grelle joined in marriage Kerry Byrne and Jon Papierniak in a beautiful nuptial mass at 11 a.m., Sat. July 8, 1972.
 
Mrs. John Smasal, 63, died on Thurs. afternoon at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Joseph Romanowski, 62, Town of Taft, route 2, Stanley, died suddenly on Thurs. afternoon, July 13th.
 
Charlotte Schmidt 76, passed away at her home on Tues. July 11 of a heart attack.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
Emil Meyer, 67, Bethany, Missouri, formerly of Thorp died at his home Fri. July 17, 1987.
 
Leonard and Marilyn Vetterkind wish to announce the birth of a baby boy, Jeremy Robert, 8 lbs., 8 oz, 21 inches long on July 9, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa.
 
Dale M. Shortell, 76, Stanley, died Fri., July 17, 1987 in Stanley at his residence.
 
Sylvester J. “Sonny” Kastel, 61, Stanley, died Sun. July 19, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sat. July 18, 1987 at the Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, for John T. Oliver, 64, route 3, Greenwood, who died Wed. July 15, 1987.
 
Winston Wohld, 80, Route 3, Stanley, Town of Worden, died Mon. July 13, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Rachel K. Rosik, nee Wilhelm, was born in Thorp, Jan. 20, 1919 to W. A. and Anna Wilhelm and died on July 11, 1987.
