100 Years Ago (1897)

Berries are plentiful, blackberries particularly so, the crop being immense.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anson Heagle on Thurs. morning last.
 
Dr. P. McKittrick reports the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rasmussen on Sun. Aug 8th; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Peter VanErt of the Town of Worden on Mon. Aug. 9th.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. B. Micke, of the Town of Worden on Thurs. last.
 
W. C. Tufts, of Withee, has accepted a position as bookkeeper and clerk at the Garrison Mercantile Cos. Store in this village.  Mr. Tufts has had several years experience in the mercantile line and is right at home behind the counter.
 
Hiram N. Withee, 73, an old resident of Neillsville, died on July 31st.
 
Herman Freiss, proprietor of the meat market, and Miss Emma Banderob, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Banderob, were united in marriage by Justice Geo. Burke on Tues.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Bobb’s Mill – A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Scott on Aug. 7. – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Arciszewski on July 29th. – While working, on the telephone line on Mon. George Telford fell from one of the poles and broke three bones in his foot.
 
Anton Micke threshed six acres of wheat at his farm in the Town of Worden last week the result being an average of thirty-seven bushes per acre.
 
Edward L. Gruszynski, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Gruszynski of this village, and Miss Hattie Wesolowski, of South Bend, were united in marriage at South Bend on Tues. Aug. 8th.
 
The Courier has received an announcement of the marriage of Dr. Leland Sterling McKittrick to Miss Addie Moore Davision which interesting event occurred on Aug. 5th.  The newly weds will reside at Brookline, Mass.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
At the First Methodist Church in Waukesha, Sat. Aug. 9th, the Rev. Harry Lee and Mrs. Grace Swim, of Thorp, were united in marriage.
 
The rectory of St. Hedwig’s Church was the setting Aug. 10 when Miss Ardath Eve Ehlert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Ehlert was married to Robert M. Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Carter of Perry, Iowa.
 
Mrs. Katherine Zielanis (nee Giwojna), 66, passed away of a heart ailment on Mon. Aug. 4, 1947 at Sacred heart Hospital at Eau Claire.
 
Ralph Hoye, son of Mrs. Rose Mayenschein, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire on Mon. July 28.
 
A rainbow wedding took place on Sat. July 26th at St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, when Miss Frances Burzynski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burzynski, became the bride of Benjamin Pawlak, son of Mrs. Martha Pawlak, Thorp.
 
A son, David Allen was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Backus, on Thurs. Aug. 7.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
The Grand Opening and Dedication ceremony of Peoples Exchange Bank in Lublin will be held this coming Sun. Aug. 13th.
 
Helen Szymanski, 82, passed away suddenly at her home, Sat. Aug 5th.
 
Raymond Kosla, 45, of Bellinger died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield Monday night after being injured in a tractor accident Sat. afternoon.
 
The baptism of Brent Allen Losiewicz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Losiewicz was held on Sun.
 
Appointment of Lawrence Hampton the new regional office in Orlando, Florida has been announced by ITT Thorp Corp.
 
Mrs. Alice L. Myers, 89, resident of Stanley, passed away at the Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley on Sun.
 
Word was received by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Liazuk of a birth of a grandson, Daniel Jon, to Mr. and Mrs. Jon Hillstead on Aug. 1st at Albuquerque, N.M.  Mrs. Hillstead is the former Diana Liazuk.
 
Miss Doris Ann Smitke, Milwaukee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Smitke, Medford and Drew Allan Smerl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Smerl of Wauwatosa were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Sat. July 29, 1972.
 
Carol Jean Polnaszek and William Andrew Stasila of Thorp were united in marriage in a double ring nuptial mass July 29 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Lamoine E. Anderson, 46, died Fri. at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Miss Rose Ann Stachnik, Madison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stachnik, Thorp, became the bride of Ronald James Lau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lau, Stratford on Sat. July 22 at Christ Lutheran Church, Marshfield.
 
Miss Christine Koltis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Koltis, Owen, became the bride of Randall E. Plautz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Plautz, Owen on Sat. July 29th at Holy Rosary Church, Owen.
 
Melanie Kananen and Douglas Woodworth were married July 27 in Madison, WI.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Pauline Dmytro, 96, died Sun. Aug. 9, 1987 at the Thorp Care Center.
 
Lottie Lukasiewicz, 81, Thorp, died Aug. 7, 1987 at University Hospital, Minneapolis.
 
Robert and Ann Lawcewicz are proud parents of a baby boy, Mark Robert, born Aug. 5, 1987.
 
Ron and Linda Klovas are the proud parents of a son, Ryan Michael, born on July 31, 1987.
 
Roger Creek – A son, Ken Douglas, was born Wed. Aug. 5, at Victory Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Smasal.
 
Blanche Margaret Dircks, 83, died Thurs. Aug. 6, 1987 at her home.
 
Brian Robert Wiseman, 43, Eau Claire, died from cancer Tues. July 28, 1987 at Luther Hospital.
