100 Years Ago (1897)

Peter Paul and Miss Maggie Nichols were married by Justice Geo. Burke, at the Douglas House in this village on Thurs. last.
 
Chief Engineer, Julius Rasmussen, with the aid of H. Leibole, gave the inside of the water tank its semi annual scrubbing on Sun. last.
 
Herman Johnson, Henry Klauck, Peter Heiser, F. Leslie and James Helme returned from Park River, N.D., last week where they have been harvesting and threshing.
 
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Goss, aged six months, died on Sat. evening last.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Bobb’s Mill – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bobb on Oct. 14.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Jacobson on Wed. Oct. 11th.
 
Arthur Steele has rented the Arthur Schott farm in the Town of Reseburg and will move to that farm shortly.  Mr. Schott we understand will move to Colby.
 
Kraemer & Co., of St. Paul secured the contract for laying the sewer pipe extension of 560 feet on the north side on Fri. last on their bid of $1,078.00.
 
Carl Bialkowski, 21, son of Jos. Bialkowski was found dead in the silo on his father’s farm in the west part of the Town of Thorp on Fri. evening last.  It is said the young man was severely injured in a fight at a neighborhood dance a few evenings previous.  Clark County officials are investigating the matter and arrests may follow.
 
Wm. Wagner, for 39 years sole owner of The Thorp Courier, has taken his son, Wm. S. Wagner, into partnership with him.  The junior has been in charge of most of the work in the office for the past two years.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Ernest Vetterkind, 78, of the Town of Hixon passed away at his farm home there of old age complications on Oct. 17, 1947.
 
An eight pound baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Burzinski on Sat. Oct. 16th at Victory Hospital, Stanley.
 
During a 9:30 solemn High Mass, celebrated on Sat. Oct. 4th, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp, Miss Agnes Neiman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Neiman, became the bride of John Jarosz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Jarosz, both of Thorp.
 
A very pretty wedding took place at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp, Wed. Oct. 15, 1947, when Rev. Muckerheide united in holy bonds of matrimony Raymond T. Graham, of Wapello, Iowa, son of Mrs. Belle Graham and Eileen Henke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Henke, Thorp.

Mrs. Edna (Balcer) Patch, 68, died Oct. 17th in Detroit, Mich.
 
Services were conducted, Mon. in Owen for Mrs. Ida Munson, 82, Withee who died Fri. at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Eau Claire.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Grendzinski Sr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sat. Sept. 16, 1972.
 
Miss Kathryn J. Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson, New Brighton, Minn., became the bride of Donald J. Zielanis, Eau Claire son of Mrs. Elsie Zielanis, Withee and Mr. Leon Zielanis, Thorp on Sat. Sept. 23rd at Bethel Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.
 
St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, was the setting for the marriage of Carol Ann Sauer and Dennis Dean Hedler on Sat. Oct. 7.
 
Josephine Rogus, 79, died at Victory Memorial Hospital, on Sept. 29, 1972, of a stroke.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
Muriel Bivans, 78, Stanley passed away Tues. Oct. 20, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Jean (Maslowski) Sorenson, 80, former Lublin resident, died Sun. Oct. 18, 1987 at St. Anthony’s Health Care Center, Minneapolis.
 
Gregory Penk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Penk of Thorp, was among the 1987 candidates to receive degrees at the summer commencement exercises at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse July 31.  Penk received his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science.
 
The Thorp High School volleyball team completed the most successful regular season in its history last weekend, ending with a 14-3 overall record and an 11-3 conference record.  The Cardinals took sole possession of second place by sweeping three matches at a conference quadrangular.
 
Brian R. Lewallen, son of Jerry and Elaine Hazuga of Thorp, enlisted in the U. S. Navy last month as a part of a special recruit company associated with the Minnesota Twins, known as the Minnesota Twins Recruit Company.
 
Bob and Deb Kaszubowski, Route 2, Thorp announce the birth of a son, Kevin Tyler, Oct. 5, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Taft – Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rudnick are happy to announce that their daughter and husband, Peggy and Rick Wrobel, who reside in Machia, Maine, have adopted a 4 month old baby girl and named her Margaret Marie.
 
William J. O’Neill, 62, Eau Clarie, died Mon. Oct. 12, 1987 at Abot-Northwestern Hospital, Minn.
 
Victoria St. Angelo, 92, died Thurs. Oct. 15, 1987 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Julia Emily Gutowski, 75, Route 3, Stanley, died Sat. Oct. 17, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Mrs. Maude (Swim) Rogers, 90, passed away at Waukesha Memorial Hospital on Sun. Oct. 18, 1987.
