100 Years Ago (1897)

Married at the Douglas House in this village on Nov. 6, 1897, by Court Commissioner Geo. Burke were John Perkins and Miss Olga Larson, both of Stanley.

Supervisors: E. R. Wiley of the village, Eph. Lindquist, chairman of the Town of Thorp, Math. Brunner Chairman of the Town of Withee, Ole Samulson, Chairman of Reseburg, went to Neillsville on Monday to attend the annual meeting of the county board.

Quite a remarkable circumstance occurred here during the noon hour on Sat. last.  Prof. A. O. Rhea discovered a deer in his pasture lot southwest of the school house and securing his shot gun set a charge broadside into the animal, upon which the deer jumped the fence and fled in the direction of the stave factory, came tearing up the street, turned north at the Forest Queen House corner, crossed the R. R. track into Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s mill yard where Chas. Chase happened to be practicing at a mark with a rifle.  The third shot Mr. Chase succeeded in hitting the deer and killing it.  It is several years since deer have been in the habit of roaming around the streets especially in daylight and everybody on the street at the time of the occurrence seemed too much surprised to secure a gun and shoot.
