100 Years Ago (1898)

Eidsvold – The baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Raymond died on Sun. the 5th inst., aged one year, 6 month and 3 days.
 
Thorp has more good sidewalks, cleaner streets, better water and better health than any other town in the county.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carpenter of Reseburg Township on Fri. last.
 
Arnold Voelker, formerly a clerk here for M. Wiltgen, and a brother of Mrs. Wiltgen, is a member of the Marshfield military company now stationed at Chickamauga Park.
 
The woodmen reunion held in this Village on Sat. last was a decided success in every particular.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Posen – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Hansen Fri. June 1st, but the little one died.
 
Gregoire’s Corner – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Micke, May 29th.
 
Joe Maslowski, of the Town of Reseburg, is the new bookkeeper at the Thorp Produce Co.
 
Mis Margaret Richelieu, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Richelieu and Mr. Arno Vater of Withee were united in marriage on May 31st at the home of the bride’s parents, east of Owen.
 
Dr. W. G. Riopelle sold his residence property recently to Dr. F. P. Neis of Plainfield and moved his family to Chippewa Falls last week where he will continue the practice of his profession.  Dr. Neis and family arrived here last week and have taken possession of their new home. Dr. Neis is a graduate of Marquette and has been in active practice for the past five or six years.
 
Friday night’s exercises at the Opera House concluded this school year. Fifteen graduates: Pearl Aucutt, Waldo Albert, Elmer Broeren, Hester Bradshaw, Kathryn Czyzewicz, Thomas Deauchampe, John Kurtinaitis, Tekla Heideman, Eva Kronberg, Kenneth Lindquist, Frank Schmidt, Leighton Morris, Elsie Verkuilen, Linda Walsdorf and Tracy Zaborowski received diplomas.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Benzschawel on Wed. May 30th.
 
Miss Florence Soderberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Soderberg, and Mrs. Vilas Telford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Telford, were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Church in this village on Tues. May 29th.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
The wedding of Miss Lorraine Foster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Foster, of Stanley, to Bernard Benzschawel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Benzschawel of Thorp, took place Sat. May 29th at St. Mary’s Church, Stanley.
 
Eidsvold – Wm. Smith received word of the death of his son George, 43, who died on May 25, at Goshen, Ind.
 
25 years Ago (1973)
 
A seven pound baby girl was born on June 2nd to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Lato of Stratford.
 
A seven pound baby girl, Deborah Marie, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gib Voelker on Thurs. June 7th, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Miss Connie Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Martin of Gilman became the bride of David Gulcynski, son of Mrs. Wanda Gulcynski of Thorp, on Sat. May 19, 1973.
 
Madonna C. Walczyk and James R. Timm, both of Wisconsin Dells were married Sat. May 19th at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells.
 
Gertrude Louise Almanda Barth, 75, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield of a coronary on June 6, 1973.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
Stanley (Bak) Bonk, 75, Village of Lublin, died at his home Sat. May 28, 1988.
 
Laura M. Kovatch, 80, McGregor, Minn., a former Thorp area resident, died Tues. May 24, 1988 at home.
 
Scott Turenne of Thorp will be among the last 26 graduates, the Class of 1988, of the School of Nursing of Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
 
Paul Ehlert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ehlert of Thorp, graduated May 20 from Chippewa Technical College.  He earned his degree in the Civil Engineering Technology Program.
 
Patricia Ann Slowiak, daughter of Carl and Marian Slowiak, Thorp, received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Comprehensive Special Education Learning Disabilities, Kindergarten through twelfth grade.
 
Corner News – Dan and Cathy Bohl are the proud parents of a baby girl born May 25 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
A daughter, Gretta May, was born to Scott and Brenda (Vanderhyden) Layman, Chippewa Falls, May 18, 1988.
