100 Years Ago (1898)

Clark County, organized in 1853, was named after A. W. Clark of Clark’s Mill in 1843.
 
H. F. Goff and Fred Hansman are each erecting large barns on their respective farms in the Town of Reseburg.
 
St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Congregation is erecting a large neat residence for their pastor, directly south of the church two miles east of the village.
 
G. L. Hoesly transferred his lease of the Forest Queen House to Mat Storey last week and himself and wife went to Neillsville where they will reside in the future.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
A. G. Shilts has resigned his position as manager of the Citizens Cooperative Milling Co. and R. Verweyst has been installed in his place by the directors.
 
The best cheese turned into the Kraft Bros. Cheese Warehouse here during May was by Lombard Dairy Co., factory No. 2, Tony Kutnarowski being the cheesemaker.
 
Miss Helen Jasinek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Jasinek, of the Town of Withee, and Mr. Joseph Haraburda of Chicago were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Church on Mon. morning.
 
Ensign Francis Laurent who has just completed a four year course at the Annapolis Naval Academy arrived here on Mon. to pay his mother, Mrs. F. Laurent, and friends a short visit.  Mr. Laurent will continue in Uncle Sam’s service and will leave for the Pacific coast shortly.
 
The marriage of Miss Hattie Slupski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Slupski of the Town of Withee, and Mr. Lucian Dymik, of Chicago, took place on Tues. morning at St. Hedwig’s Church.
 
Thomas Herman died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. Zaborowski on Wed. of last week.  He was born in Prussia, Nov. 17, 1838.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Miss Harriet Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson, of Stanley, became the bride of Gerald Asselin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Asselin, of Thorp, on Sat. May 29th.
 
Charles Rasmussen, 77, who has resided in the City for the past six years, passed away at the hospital at Chippewa Falls on Wed. June 2, 1948.
 
The remains of Pfc. Vincent A. Pawlicki, World War II Veteran arrived at the Thorp Funeral Home on Wed. morning from Europe and interment will be made this morning, June 10th at Lublin.
 
The body of Cpl. John Wojt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Wojt, of Thorp, who died overseas, will be interred in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling, Minn., June 28, 1948.

25 years Ago (1973)

 
Trees were stripped of leaves and branches, some were blown down, and some property damage was reported as the result of high gusty winds that struck the area during the noon hour Mon.
 
The Doctorate of Education Degree was conferred on Miss Roberta Broeren in commencement exercises at Wayne State University on June 15, 1973.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Phil Lato of Minneapolis, Minn., on Sun. June 17th.
 
Mrs. Martha Harycki received word of the birth of her first great-grandchild, Rochelle Ann Fiester, born June 11, 1973 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fiester of Palatine, Ill.
 
Amelia Sliva, 82, passed away suddenly at her home at Chicago, IL.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Mae Peterson, 82, resident of Stanley, were held Wed. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Stanley. 
 
Services were held Mon. at the Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home, Owen for Ernest Dumke, 73, Route 1, Owen, who died Fri. at his home.
 
Lilies were on the altar of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, for the marriage of Christine Siok and Harold Kolasa on Sat. April 28, 1973.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
John Rogus, 83, Chippewa Falls, former Thorp resident, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire on Sun. June 5, 1988.
 
Earl O. Rusch, 66, Route 1, Withee, died Tues. May 31, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Thorp High School Golfer of the Year award is a Brunett family tradition.  Corey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Brunett, is this year’s recipient.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Osowski are proud to announce the arrival of their 11th grandchild; born to Pam and James Hayden, Carrollton, Texas on June 5, 1988.  He is named Nicholas James.
 
Jerome and Cynthia (Henke) Ferk, Thorp, announce the birth of their daughter, Chelsea Catherine on May 30, 1988 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Abe Niedzwiecki, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christine Niedzwiecki, recently graduated from Texas State Technical Institute, Waco, Texas.  He received his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Laser Electronics.
 
Two area residents were among graduates who took part in commencement exercises at the UW-River Falls on Sun. May 22; Timothy Kotecki Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Computer Science and math and Joel Stuttgen received the Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Animal Science and minor in farm management.
 
Karen Koltis and her daughter, Cheryl Cox of Thorp not only graduated together from Mount Senario College, but they both received Science degrees in social work and criminal justice.
 
The following students have won awards at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire.  Connaught Lindquist, won Teacher’s Assoc. Scholarship and is a student in the Histotechnology program; Yvonne Messing, won the Eau Claire, Dunn, Pepin Medical Auxiliary Scholarship and is a student in the Medical Laboratory Technician program; Diane Verkuilen, won the Myrtle LeMay Best Scholarship and is a student in the Medical Laboratory Technician program.
