100 Years Ago (1898)

Herman Frese and A. T. Rimenschneider accompanied two car loads of livestock to Chicago on Sun. morning last.
 
Joseph Frett, 30, who resided just outside and northwest of the village, and his family from Stanley, died early on Thurs. morning last of heart failure, having been in poor health for time past.
 
Lizzie Wink of the Town of Worden and John Peters of the Town of Reseburg were married at the Catholic Church of this village on Tues. morning, July 12.
 
Eidsvold – Peter Pinter, a well known blacksmith of this place, was accidentally killed by a west bound train on the RR track on Tues. evening of last week about a mile east of Boyd.  His remains were subsequently conveyed to his residence here and he was buried on Fri.
 
The writer incidentally enjoyed the privilege of attending a very pretty wedding over on the west side at the residence of H. W. Varney last Sun. July 3rd.  The contracting parties being: Mr. Henry Poppe of Longwood and Miss Josephine LaFlex of Thorp.
 
The furniture factory located at Neillsville and which has been idle for many years, has been purchased by Keer Bros. & Co., of Hicksville, Ohio, and will be started again in the near future.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Reseburg – Caesar Barth Jr. and Harold Mattes started for the harvest fields in the west Tues.
 
N. Jasinek sold his farm northeast of the village last week to Stanley Lawciewicz, of Chicago.  Mr. Jasinek purchased Mrs. Anna Lasota’s residence in this village.
 
A pretty home wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hodorowski when their daughter, Ann, was united in marriage to John Tomkowiak by Rev. Kulig Tues. morning.
 
All motor trucks, delivery wagons, passenger busses, and tractors must be re-registered with the secretary of state July 1, and the new license fee established by the weight law paid.
 
Over sixteen hundred vehicles, most all of them automobiles, passed the corner two miles east of Thorp from six A. M. to eleven P. M. on July 4th.  The count was made by M. Greisch of the county road commission.
 
A very pretty wedding took place Sat. June 30th, at Stanley where Emma Margaret, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Timlin became the bride of William J. Lokrantz, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Lokrantz.
 
The celebration of the 147th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th proved to be the greatest event every held in the history of Thorp.  The estimated attendance of visitors during the day was placed at 7,000 or 8,000.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Herman, on July 6th.
 
Taft – Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Boardman, of Thorp, on the birth of a daughter Judy Ann.  Mrs. Boardman is remembered as Viola Thompson.
 
Reseburg – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frese, Jr., Wed. June 30th. – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Jacque, Thurs. July 1st.
 
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Lowry at Los Angeles, Calif. on June 29.  Mrs. Lowry was Miss Pearl Larson, R. N.
 
John Lech, 75, passed away suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Casimer Grucelski, east of the City on Sat., July 3rd.
 
Gilman – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Dufy at the Victory Hospital at Stanley, a baby girl on June 24th.
 
25 years Ago (1973)

 
Leo F. Strovers, 56, of Stanley died at the Stanley Hospital at 4 a.m. Mon. from injuries received at 12:30 a.m. in a collision.
 
Sylvester Krakowiecki, 73, died at his home in Lublin on July 17.
 
The registrar of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls spring quarter deans list: Roger Flashinski, Candance Horn, Jeanie Maslowski, and John Nied.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bartosewicz, Thorp, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary June 30, 1973.
 
Frank Pawlowicz, 91, former Lublin resident died Sat. July 7th, at Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
 
Lublin – Mr. and Mrs. Alex Slowiak received news of the birth of their 12th grandchild, a boy, Scott Charles, born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Slowiak of West Allis.
 
The Faith Evangelical Free Church was the setting chosen by Miss Violet Louise Kroeplin, Gilman, for her marriage to Mr. Rollin McCartnery, Gilman on May 29th.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
 Allen Hubbard, 73, Thorp, died Thurs. June 30, 1988 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Geraldine Gage, 68, rural Greenwood, Town of Mead, died Mon. July 4, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Anton Grajek, 85, Lublin, died Sun. July 3, 1988 at his home.
 
Harold Hansen, 78, Stoughton, died in a hospital in Stoughton on Mon. June 27th.  He was born in Thorp.
 
Severy Szczesniak, 84, Withee, died Mon. June 27, 1988.
 
Frances W. Hoeper, 68, a former Owen-Withee resident, died Sat. June 25, 1988 in Dayton, OR.
 
Veronica E. Seidl, Stanley, 92, died Tues. June 28, 1988 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Rebecca Hoffman, a May graduate of the College of Saint Theresa in Winona, MN, earned an honor point average of 3.8 during the second semester of the 1987-88 academic year.
 
Two area students were among the graduates of the University of Wisconsin-Stout to receive degrees May 14th; Kathleen Gulcynski, and Mrs. Karen Zurakowski Stuttgen.
 
Susan Slowiak and Patrick Lynett were married June 11, 1988 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Thorp.
 
Air Force Sgt. Kevin J. Grendzinski, son of Alex and Hilda Grendzinski of Thorp, has arrived for duty in West Germany.
