100 Years Ago (1898)

Stanley Sunbeams – Arthur baker and Miss Effie Seely were married here at the home of the bride’s parents by Justice Chalkley on Sun. last.
 
P. LaFlex succeeded in killing two bears last week.
 
E. A. Boardman has just received a large size corn shelling machine for use at his mill.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Parkhill on Tuesday Oct. 15th.
 
The Thorp Mercantile Co. have begun the erection of another store building, 26 x 80 feet in size and located directly south of their present store, to be used for warehouse purposes and displaying stoves and furniture.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Eidsvold – A baby daughter arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Baker last week.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Fischer on Sun. Oct. 7th.
 
Eugene Mitchell, of Iowa, and Miss Murl Schneider, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Schneider, of this village were married on Sun. afternoon last by J. H. Benson at the M. E. Parsonage.
 
Mrs. Anna Erli, 87, who has been ill at the hospital at Medford, died on Wed. of last week, and had been a resident here about seven years ago.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Hilda (Ramberg) Rossman was born in Baldwin, Wis. on Aug. 31, 1886.  On Sat. Oct. 2nd she suddenly became very ill, a blood clot having formed on her brain.  She was called to her final sleep on Sun. Oct. 3rd.
 
Anton Tomczak, 68, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Tues. Dec. 28th.
 
John Wuethrich, 63, prominent citizen of Greenwood, passed away at his home there Tues. afternoon, after an illness of several years duration.
 
Funeral services were conducted at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church here on Mon. morning, Oct. 4th for Casimer Sobolewski, 59, who died at his home here on Sept. 29 of a heart attack.
 
Matt Gruber, 74, passed away at the Victory Hospital at Stanley, Sun. noon.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fischer are the proud parents of a daughter, born at the Marshfield Hospital on Thurs. Oct. 7th.
 
Breezy Hill – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kumbera at a Wausau Hospital Thurs.  Mrs. Kumbera is the former Viola Soeller.
 
St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Wed. Oct. 6th, when Miss Lucille Strzok, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Strzok, became the bride of Theodore Salwach.
 
Miss Eva Morgan, Long Island New York, daughter of Joseph Morgan, of Thorp, and Mr. Frederick Stafford, son of Francis Stafford, of Northport, L. I. New York, were united in marriage Oct. 2nd at St. Joan of Arc’s Catholic Church, Jackson Heights, L. I. New York.
 
Gilman – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Alois Wilcenski, a daughter on Oct. 8, at the Victory Hospital at Stanley.
 
25 years Ago (1973)
 
Mary Gajda, 90, died Mon. Oct. 22nd.
 
Eugene J. Zakrzewicz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene F. Zakrzewicz, Thorp, became eligible for a commission as a Second Lieutenant upon his completion of the officer candidate reserve course at Ft. Benning, GA.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Jack LaGasse are happy to announce the arrival of a new grandson, Edward Richard, born to their daughter Terry and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bellin, in Green Bay on Oct. 19, 1973.
 
Louise Malecki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malecki, Jr., Thorp, was elected to serve on the Student-Faculty Committee of the Occupational Therapy Curriculum during 1973-74.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Frese of Chelsea, Iowa, a baby girl on Oct. 19, they named her Dorothy Esther.
 
Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Dan Devine of Bruce, Wis. are the parents of a baby boy named Douglas James, born Oct. 19th.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
Valentine Konczak, 79, Lublin, died Sat. Oct. 8, 1988 at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen.
 
Nicolas John Abramowicz, son of Wayne and Tammie was baptized into the church family of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Sun. Oct. 9, 1988.
 
On the evening of July 1, 1988, Kim Olson and Jerry Kobylarczyk, both of Thorp, were united in marriage during a candlelight ceremony performed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Jacquelyn Marie Klaver, daughter of Peter and Margaret Klaver, Fall Creek was united in marriage to Lawrence Mathias Depa, son of Peter and Margaret Depa, Thorp on July 2, 1988 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona.
 
Anna Cukla, 81, died Wed. Oct. 5, 1988 and her husband Peter Cukla, 84, died Wed. Oct. 5, 1988 at Northwest Community Hospital Arlington Heights, Ill.
 Gregg Bogumill, 26, Marshfield, died of respiratory failure, Mon. Oct. 3, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice Care Unit.
