Former Gas Station Ready for Display

Saturday, September 2, (2006) the Thorp Area Historical Museum will proudly display its newest exhibit – the old gas station building formerly located on Thorp’s North Washington Street. For months, a volunteer group of individuals led by Fred Turenne have worked diligently to restore the classic building that once stood at the present site of Reis & Reis Accounting.

Once moved from that site, the old building relocated to the Zajack farm north of Thorp on Highway 73, where it served as a storage building until it was donated to the museum. ‘’”The building has been restored to look like a filling station again,” explained Ann Huls, historical society member, “and we’ll use it to showcase memorabilia, including what we think is the station’s original cash register.” Also featured will be information about the Yellowstone Trail, which runs through Thorp less than two blocks south of where the station was situated.

Festivities at the Museum begin at 2:00 p.m. and will feature guest speaker Jim Grabon, a former Thorp resident, who will talk about the community’s early days. Other residents will also be sharing their old Thorp memories. Music and food sales will also be on site.
