Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   March 23, 2005

The trees are bare, and there’s just a little snow on the ground, way back when in 1913 when this photograph was taken of a schoolhouse and its students. Who are these more than 50 students, and how did two or three teachers manage to care for all of their educational needs at one time? What was the name of this school and where was it located? Who were the children, and are any of them still alive today? Can you find any of your relatives in the photo? Call to let us know.

Lil Hedler stopped in with her response to our Way Back When photograph of a Thorp basketball team which was featured in our March 9, 2005 issue. According to Mrs. Hedler, the photo depicts the City of Thorp team from 1946-1947, which consisted of: Back Row (L-R) Coach Pat Soderberg, Ed Polnaszek, Slim Graham, Ken Bachmeyer, Gaye Asselin, Stu North, Deacon Hedler, Jack Glasshof and Dan Slupski. Front Row: Rich Polnaszek, Joe Pawlak, Hank Lutz, Julius Morgan, Doc Stuesse4r, Pete Larson, and Richard Turenne.

Former Thorpite John Harycki, now of Arlington, Texas, called in Tuesday morning with information about this very popular and successful men’s team. Having watched the team as a youngster, Mr. Harycki remembers the skills of Doc Stuesser and Julius Morgan. He especially remembers Slim Graham, who stood more than 6’6” and was from Iowa. He believes that this was Coach Stu North’s first year in Thorp, having recently returned from the Battle of the Bulge. According to John, this team was known across the state and competed against teams from Milwaukee and the large cities.

Attention readers! The Thorp Courier has just about run through all of our stash of old photographs for our Way Back When feature! We therefore are asking for readers with old photographs to bring them in for us to use. We can scan them while you wait and return them immediately. We’ll greatly appreciate your help so that we can keep this popular feature alive!
