Clarendon Smith

April 19, 1852 - November 19, 1925

Clarendon Smith was born in Bristol, Wisconsin; a son of John T. and Julia Smith (although one obituary indicates that his mother's name was Mary and another indicates it was May).  At the age of eight, he relocated with his parents to Green Lake County, Wisconsin.  The 1860 Federal Census for St. Marie Township, Green Lake County, Wisconsin shows a John T. Smith (50) living with his wife Juliana (41) and three children:  Thomas (14), Evenine (12) and Clarendon (8).  The 1870 Census for St. Marie Township lists John T. Smith (59) with his wife, Julia (52) and three children:  Evenine (23), Clarendon (17) and Ellsworth (10).

Clarendon married Emma Ferris on January 2, 1875.  In 1878; Clarendon, Emma and their first son, Guy, came to York Township, Clark County, Wisconsin to settle.  Clarendon and Emma Smith had two sons and a daughter:  Guy, Lee and Ethel.  The 1880 Federal Census for York Township, Clark County, Wisconsin shows and Emma Smith (27) living in York Township as the wife of a C. L. Smith with two sons: Guy (3) and Lee (1).  The 1900 Federal Census for York Township shows Emma Smith (46) living with her husband (48) and three children: Guy (23), Lee (21) and Ethel (17).  The 1910 Federal Census for York Township lists C. L. Smith (58) and Emma Smith (56) living with their daughter, Ethel (27).  It also shows their son, Guy (33) living with his wife, Belle (29) and two daughters: Isabelle (5) and Violet (3).

After his wife, Emma, passed away in 1912, he sold his farm; presumably to Fred Kier since later York Township Plat Maps show that the Kiers owned the acreage that Clarendon Smith owned in Section 22.  He then lived in Chetek, Wisconsin until circa 1920.  After that he lived with his children.  Obituaries indicate that he died in Browerville, Minnesota where he was living with his daughter, Ethel (nee Smith) Kendall.

The 1893 Plat Map for York Township shows C. L. Smith owning 40 acres in Section 22.  The 1906 York Plat Map shows also shows C. L. Smith owning the same 40 acres in Section 22.

Other immediate relatives of Clarendon Smith that are buried in York Center Cemetery include his wife, Emma (nee Ferris) Smith; his son, Guy Smith; his daughter-in-law, Belle (nee Benedict) Smith; his grandson, Robert Smith; and his sister-in-law, Ella (nee Ferris) Parker.
