Barbara and Errol Schmelling

Barbara and Errol Schmelling of Rhinelander, formerly of Merrill, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, with a dinner for family and friends hosted by their children, and on Sunday, Feb. 18, with a celebration at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bloomville with a Mass and a reception for family and friends. Other members of the original wedding party present at the celebration included maid of honor Lillian Roberts, Chesterfield, Mo.; and ring bearer Gerald Palmer, Waunakee. On Tuesday, Feb., 27, the Newcomers group in Rhinelander surprised them with another celebration.

Errol and the former Barbara Clark were married Feb. 16, 1957, in Kenosha County.

The couple has five children: Jay (Debbie) Schmelling, Kitty (Gary) Gartmann, Ted (Christine) Schmelling, Kevin (Beth) Schmelling and Keith (Debbie) Schmelling, all of Merrill; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Errol was a plumber by trade, and retired as business agent for Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 434 in Wausau. He was previously a union agent in the Kenosha area also, as well as having his own plumbing business.

Barb worked for Club Modern in Merrill for 10 years and also retired from serving Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 434.

They are currently involved with the Newcomers group in Rhinelander, and work with the pre-marriage program at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Rhinelander. They are members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bloomville. Last July and August, Errol and Barb took a five-week driving trip to Alaska and western Canada as an early 50th wedding celebration.
