Carl H. Broeking

Carl H. Broeking, 84, of Merrill, passed away to his final home in heaven on Sunday evening, May 13, 2007, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.

Carl was born June 1, 1922, on the family farm in the town of Edson, Chippewa County, to Harry L. and Olga Grimm Broeking. He attended the rural Popple Grove School and graduated from Stanley High School with the class of 1940. He married Regina Gorsegner on May 31, 1947, in St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, rural Thorp.

After farming in the Stanley area, Carl and his family moved to Wausau in 1951, where he became a member of the Wausau Fire Department. In 1955, they returned to farming in the town of Corning. After retiring from farming in 1973, Carl had a new home built on a parcel of the farmland where he resided until four days prior to his passing. He had been a bulk milk hauler for Pauley's and Inofoods and had been employed by the Merrill Area Public Schools for 10 years. Most recently, he had been a greeter at Wal-Mart in Merrill for 13 years until November 2002, a position he thoroughly enjoyed and felt privileged to become acquainted with the associates and customers. Carl enjoyed visiting with people. He loved horses and had special memories of his horse Sandy, that he had owned during his childhood. Another special memory was learning to fly a Piper Cub that he shared with some of his friends in the 1940s. He especially enjoyed sledding and as late as the winter of 2005-06, he sledded down the slopes in front of his residence. Carl was a member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, town of Berlin, and had served on various committees.

Survivors besides Regina, his wife of nearly 60 years, include son Bruce, Merrill; daughters Judy (John) Breneman, Gothenburg, Sweden; Nancy (Gerald) Winchell, Mayville; and Joann (Tim) Larkee, N. Fort Myers, Fla.; grandchildren Bruce (Heather) Broeking Jr., Merrill; Mike Broeking, Wausau; Rick Broeking, Merrill; J. David Breneman, Newcastle, Australia; Joylyn Breneman, London, England; Matthew Winchell, Madison; and Kira Winchell, Mayville; and great-grandchildren McKenzie and Bryce Broeking. Also surviving are sister Dorine Kluenker, Manitowoc; his mother-in-law Ella Gorsegner, Thorp; sister-in-law Helen Davis, Canton, Minn.; and brother-in-law Leonard Gorsegner, Stillman Valley, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were Friday, May 18, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church (WELS), town of Berlin. Rev. Jeffrey Schmidt officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family.
