Florence C. Lee

Florence C. "Flo" Lee, 87, Kimberly, formerly of Merrill, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Parkside Care Center, Little Chute.

Florence Caroline Schmidt arrived Nov. 22, 1919, in Cook County, Chicago, Ill.; daughter of Alfred Schmidt (a baker) and Florence Layette Schmidt, a housewife. She married Bernhardt "Ben" Johnson of Merrill. They reared four sons: Donald, Kimberly; Leland (Karen), Big Falls; Richard (Arlys Bourdage), Tomahawk; and Phillip (Janet), Kaukana; daughters Blanche Weeks (Richard, deceased), Little Chute; and Joanne (deceased). Her special family included brothers :Wilfred (deceased); Christian (Florence), Susex; Alfred (Louise), Merrill; Boyce (Bernice), Crivitz; sisters Agnes Basil (deceased) and Lorraine (John Eastburn), Ft. Myers, Fla. Additional family included 20 grandchildren, 31 great- grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. Flo was preceded in death by ex-husbands Ben Johnson, Herbert Weeks and Robert E. Lee.

Flo's family moved to the Town of Pine River when she was one. She attended school through eighth grade. Flo began her profession and only hobby, "cooking," at Skipper's Restaurant and Club Modern in Merrill. When moving to Appleton in 1950, she worked as a chef at Larry's Lunch and moved on after nine years to Hoppy's Tap, Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Press Club, and then opened her own restaurant at the Schumacher Hotel, Menasha, and then Lee's Lunch (Short Stop Restaurant), Appleton. With family she then operated the restaurant at Rich Is In, Greenville. Her talents took her to Guyon's Supper Club, Little Chute. Her final triumph was operating the Delta Tau Delta fraternity kitchen, Lawrence University, Appleton, and during summer break operated the Glacier National Park Lodge, Montana. She remained a caretaker and servant to others right up to the time of her illness in 2006. She worked as a member and cook for the Appleton Moose Lodge Chapter 404.

A remembrance celebration is being planned for a later date. All thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. Flo's family wishes to thank Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, and Verkullen Funeral Home, Little Chute, for their help and understanding, along with Parkside Care Center for their special attention during Flo's final days.
