Marcia L. Wirtz

Marcia Louise (Nugent) Wirtz, 66, of Merrill, died Tuesday evening, May 29, 2007, at University Hospital in Madison.

Marcia, the daughter of Lt. Col. Ambrose H. and Bertie R. Nugent, was born Feb. 6, 1941, in Bunkie, La. She married Charles O. Wirtz in Bessemer, Mich., on Jan. 6, 1981.

Until the age of 16, Marcia was an "army brat" in the truest sense of the word. She lived with her father, then Maj. Nugent, at various locations in Europe and the United States. At age 16, Marcia returned to Merrill, where she resided until her death. Marcia was a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Merrill. She worked for the state of Wisconsin at Lincoln Hills School in Irma for over 30 years, initially as youth counselor and for the last several years as a social worker. Marcia found great enjoyment in doing crafts, counted cross stitch, and attending various craft shows in the area. She was a dedicated exercise enthusiast, discovered a love for writing and enjoyed the solitude of walking. Last and perhaps the most satisfying to Marcia, was the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren. Marcia was a hospice volunteer for Aspirus Hospital. Her volunteer activities included visiting residents in local nursing homes, as well as work for the bereavement coordinator.

Marcia is survived by her husband Charles, Merrill; daughter Christine Voigt, Brussels; son Kevin W. (Colleen) Raasch, Edina, Minn.; sisters Barbara (Thomas) Skinner, Portland, Texas; and Nancy (Leroy) Meier, Merrill; and nieces and nephews. She is further survived by stepchildren Kathleen Schultz, San Diego, Calif.; Deborah Larson and Wendy (Dave) Larsen, both of Sheboygan; and Rick Wirtz, Malone; five grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren Robin, Sherry, Kelsey, Caitlin, Cullen, Jeff, Ryan, Aaron, Jeremy, Mellisa, Anthony and Amanda; and great-grandchildren Kaylee and Keegan. She was preceded in death by her father Lt. Col. Ambrose H. Nugent and mother Bertie Schey Nugent, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; brother Patrick H. Nugent, Merrill; and father- and mother-in-law Orval and Arlisle Wirtz.

Marcia had a brave and fearless heart. In her lifetime, she weathered many storms but always persevered. Her indomitable spirit and determination to survive and succeed will serve as a beacon to those she left behind. Memorials may be given to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice and the American Cancer Society.

Dear Marcia,

May the road rise up to meet you...may the wind always be at your back...may the sun shine warm upon your face...the rains fall soft upon your fields...and until we meet again...may God hold you in the hollow of His hand. As you join Dad, Pat and Mother, you know that our love and wishes of rest and peace are with you.

Chris, Kevin, Chuck, Barbara and Nancy

Funeral services were Saturday, June 2, at the Waid Funeral Home Chapel, Merrill, Rev. Robert Smallman officiated.
