(13 Aug. 1919 – 16 Sept. 2007) Norman W. Heideman Norman W. "Jiggs" Heideman, 88, of 1403 N. Cedar St., Merrill, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at his home under the care of his family and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. Norman was born Aug. 13, 1919, in the town of Pine River, son of the late Robert and Ottilia Kniess Heideman. He attended St. John Lutheran School in Merrill and Merrill Senior High School, graduating in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed stateside. He then married the former Joy Goodfellow in Tomahawk. She survives. Norman had been employed by Lincoln County for 29 years, first as deputy sheriff, then as the emergency government director. He had been a news and sports reporter for the former Merrill Daily Herald, and had written many newspaper columns, including "Rambling Round" and the "Quotem Pole" for the Foto News and Merrill Courier. He coached Little League, flag football, and American Legion baseball. Norman enjoyed all sports, especially Merrill High School football. He was a reporter for the former Merrill Rangers and was publicity manager for the former Merrill Foxes. He enjoyed playing golf and was proud of the "Hole in One" that he had at the Trapp River Golf Course. He was a past commander of Edward Burns Post 46, Merrill, where he was a member for over 50 years. Survivors besides his wife Joy, Merrill, include son William "Bill" Heideman, Merrill; granddaughters Jennifer (Scott) Schmoldt, Wausau; and Katie (fiance Ryan Mears) LaValle, Wisconsin; and brother Harvey (Vera), California. He was preceded in death by daughter Barbara Hodgson, son-in-law Randy Hodgson, infant daughter Susan, and brother Bernardt. Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. Kelly Leary officiated. |
