Fred J. Janssen

Fred J. Janssen, 81, of Merrill, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at his residence under Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Born in Milwaukee on Jan. 17, 1926, Fred was the son of the late Ferdinand and Maria Wagner Janssen. He married Ruby Virchow on Jan 21, 1950, she survives.

Fred had farmed in the Town of Pine River for 12 years. He then moved to Menomonee Falls where he worked at the Milwaukee Children's Hospital as a high-pressure engineer for 26 years. Fred retired in 1986 and moved back to Merrill. He served in the U.S. Army in intelligence. Fred, along with his wife, enjoyed woodcrafts, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Ruby; daughter Cheryl (Kerry) Keller, Richfield; son Gary (Cindy), Merrill; his "adopted #2" daughter Jill Smart; grandchildren Adrienne (fiancée Matt Weber) and Clifton Janssen; Brent (Rachel) Keller and Allison (Nick) Stortz; great-grandchildren Cassidy, Kendra, Morgan Ruby and Gavin; and friends, cousins, nieces, nephews and sister. He was preceded in death by brother Gerhardt.

In accordance with Fred's wishes, a private family service was held at the Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, on Friday, Oct. 19. Rev. Steven Russell officiated.

The hospice staff brought support, comfort and ongoing care for Fred and his family during weeks of challenge. With gratitude for their services, the family requests donations to be given to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services in lieu of flowers.
