Arthur E. Hanson

Former Merrill resident Arthur E. Hanson, passed away following a long illness at his home in Minocqua on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007.

Born to Norwegian parents in 1920 at the old Ravn Clinic/Hospital in Merrill, Art attended Merrill public schools and married Marjory Germain in 1946.

As a young man, Art played for the Merrill Rangers baseball team and was a champion bowler. He worked for the former Ward Paper Company in Merrill for 18 years before he and Marge took over the A&W Drive In Restaurant, which they owned and operated until 1978. He then worked part-time as a bus driver for the city of Merrill until the family moved to Minocqua in 1990. Living on Squirrel Lake, Art could indulge his life-long passion for fishing, traveling to many area and Canadian lakes, as well as catching a tournament-winning musky in the annual Squirrel Lake Musky Hunt. A member of Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, Minocqua, he was a wonderful father and devoted grandfather, always eager to share his love and knowledge of the outdoors, the Milwaukee Brewers, and especially the Green Bay Packers.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Minnie Thompson Hanson; step-mother Viola; and step-brothers Charles, Earl and Byron Johnson. Survivors include his wife Marge, Minocqua; daughter Denise (Ken) Smedberg, Palos Heights, Ill.; sons Dave, Minocqua; and Jeff (Holly Lange), Gleason; and grandchildren Erica, Jordan and Jesse Smedberg, and Joe and Amanda Buffington.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. this afternoon, Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. Kenneth Albers will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the Hanson Family requests memorials to Dr. Kate Home Health/Hospice, PO Box 770, Woodruff, WI 54568.
