Iona M. Gross

Iona M. Gross, 89, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Lynn Stick, in Glenmoore, Pa., where she had resided in recent years.

Iona was born Aug. 19, 1916, near Beechy, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Frederick W. and Alma Fritz Bessey. The family moved to Doering when she was seven years old. She married Hubert Gross on Aug. 17, 1940, in Doering.

Iona received her teaching education at Lincoln County Normal School and taught for seven years at several rural schools including Porcupine School and Echo Lake School. Iona, along with several other family members, worked in the California shipyards during World War II. When Hubert returned from overseas duty in 1946, they returned to the Gleason area where they made their home and eventually raised their five children. After Hubert died in 1986, Iona divided her time between Wisconsin in the summer and Pennsylvania and Delaware in the winter, spending time at the homes of her children. She was an avid reader, loved to garden and sew, and to make quilts for children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Elmcho Homemakers’ Club and Riverside Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Aide.

Iona is survived by her daughters Carol (John) Ament, Chippewa Falls; Lynn (Philip) Stick, Glenmoore, Pa.; and Jeanette Gross, Milwaukee; sons Hugh (Cheryl) Gross, Gleason; and Randall Gross, Rehoboth Beach, Del.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, who were the light of her life and loved to hear her tell stories of her childhood. She is also survived by brother Gary Bessey, San Pablo, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hubert, sister Marion Barnett, and brothers Ward and Forrest “Tim” Bessey.

A memorial service will be held at Riverside Presbyterian Church, Gleason, in October, amid the beautiful autumn colors that she loved.
