David E. Strauss

David Edward Strauss, 59, a resident of Algonquin, Ill., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007.

David was born Aug. 6, 1947, in Wisconsin, son of the late Wilbert and Geraldine Barnes Strauss. On May 17, 1980, he married the former Janis Joy Herdt, formerly of Merrill, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Manitowoc.

David was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Air Force. He was a firefighter in Manitowoc from 1972 to 1982. He then was employed by Motorola until his retirement in 2003. David enjoyed country dancing with his loving wife. He enjoyed life, and when asked how he was, he would always say, "Fantastic and getting better."

Survivors include Janis Strauss, his wife of 26 years, Algonquin, Ill.; daughters Erika and Emilie Strauss, both at home; sons Bill (special friend Ariel Lopez), Aurora, Ill.; and Adam, at home; foster son Jonathan Hudson, Greenville; and grandson David Aiden due in March. Also surviving are sisters Sharon (Elmer) Bruckschen, Newton; Kathy (Rich) Voboril, Mokena, Ill.; Laura (Gene) Woods, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and Barbara (Ken) Gentile, Colfax, Calif.; brothers Steve, San Jose, Calif.; and Ronald (Ellen), Oxnard; sisters-in-law Diana Danner, Harlingen, Texas; Donna (Robert) Lawrenz, Rhinelander; Ellen Blahnik, Manitowoc; and Lois (Dan) Stewart, Merrill; brothers-in-law David (Darlene) Herdt and Benjamin (Jean) Herdt, both of Merrill; Mom #2, Mavis Voboril; honorary daughter Kristina Blatt, Germany; and his best friend, Mike Vertanen; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Walter and Helena Barnes; paternal grandparents Frank and Johanna Strauss; and two favorite uncles Bill Strauss and Francis Strauss.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 16, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Pastor Mike Kleinhans officiated with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. There was a memorial service in the chapel of Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, Ill., on Jan. 20.
