Estelle Lane, 97, of Merrill, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at Woodland Court where she was a resident.

Born in Merrill on Jan. 29, 1910, Estelle was the daughter of the late Paul and Clara Rusch Koebe. She married the late Benson Lane in 1955 and moved to Park Ridge, Ill. They resided there until 1971 when they moved back to Merrill.

Estelle graduated from Merrill High School in 1929. She was employed at Gruett's Drug Store for 11 years, after which she was employed with Montgomery Ward in the ready to wear department for two years. In 1945, Estelle opened her own hat shop, with a few hand bags and some greeting cards. The next fall she put in a ready to wear department. She operated Estelle's House of Fashion for the next 28 years.

Estelle was active in the Merrill Historical Society in the early years. She received first place for quilting and table setting for the Society. Estelle was the first to receive the plaque for Life Time Member in the Merrill Historical Society. She was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill.

Estelle is survived by her brother Roman (Edna) Koebe, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Benson, and brothers Alvin, Walter and Adlor Koebe.

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. David Klemm officiated. Burial was Saturday in Merrill Memorial Park.

The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Estelle wished that memorials be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Merrill.
