Robert Colclasure

Robert "Bob" Colclasure, 61, of Merrill, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007.

Bob was born Dec. 16, 1945, to Roscoe and Nancy Lowe Colclasure in Ontonagon, Mich.

After moving to Merrill in 1978 to teach English literature and journalism at the high school, he met Kathy Kapp Kraemer, a guidance counselor. They were married on June 23, 1979.

Bob graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1964 and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Northern Michigan University in 1968. He later entered graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1970-1972 as a captain. His military service was a source of pride for him the rest of his life. Bob enjoyed music, playing banjo and guitar and singing folk songs. He often took his guitar to class to play for students. For several years Bob performed with the Trinidads, a local folk group. Bob served for eight years as Seventh Ward Alderman for the city of Merrill. He loved Merrill and what he could do for it. Bob was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marine Corps Association and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

Bob is survived by his wife Kathy; his children Mike (Jenny) Kraemer, Wausau; Leah (Greg) Wilda, Neenah; Kerry Kraemer, Chicago, Ill.; and Peter Colclasure, Madison; and grandchildren Jessey Kraemer, Steven and Mikey Toth and Zoe and Noah Wilde. He had a special bond with his autistic grandson Noah.

He is also survived by a brother, three sisters, and nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his eldest brother Merle.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. James R. Horath officiated. Full military honors followed.

The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family. Memorial donations may be made to the TB Scott Library, Autismspeaks.org, Newautism.net or Cureautismnow.org.
