Sophie R. Weinberg

Sophie R. Weinberg, 85, of Gleason, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill.

She was born May 16, 1921, in Chicago to the late Antanas and Marcella Garbincius Kuncius. Sophie married John Weinberg on March 30, 1940 in Chicago, Ill. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 2000.

Sophie had worked at a department store in Chicago in her ealier years, then was a homemaker. She was a leader for the Rural Rockets 4-H Club and was the club's drama coach. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and its Thursday morning prayer group in Bloomville. Sophie enjoyed her swimming aerobics class, her quilting club, her homemaker's club, cooking, baking, feeding the birds, playing cards and dice, sewing, working crosswords and search a word puzzles, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Sophie and her husband John enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing at the Aragonne Ballroom in Chicago. They had lived in the Bridgeport area of Chicago and moved to their farm north of Gleason in 1946. Everyone was welcome at Sophie's home, and no one ever left hungry. Sophie was known for her apple pies and meat buns.

Survivors include daughters Patricia (Robert) Ahlm, West Allis, and Judith (Jack) Buchler, Merrill; grandchildren Catherine (Dino) Tripodis, Porter Ranch, Calif., Richard Buchler, Tuscon, Ariz., Robert Ahlm, West Allis, and Carrie Ahlm, Hugo, Minn.; great grandchildren Callie, Casey, Orion and Acson. She is further survived by brother in law Wally Friedenfeldt, Gleason; sister in law Anne Kuncius, Oak Lawn, Ill.; nieces Janet and Susan, Chicago; and cousin Viola Young, Twin Lakes, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband John and brothers Peter and Anthony Kuncius.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 3, at noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Bloomville. The Rev. John Anderson and Michele Rein will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, town of Schley. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family.
