Karl M. Heldt

Karl M. Heldt, 88, formerly of Merrill, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, in Miranda, Calif.

Karl was born Oct. 13, 1917, in the town of Scott to August and Angela Zastrow Heldt. He married Gladys P. Krueger on Sept. 2, 1939, in Merrill. She survives.

Karl was a graduate of Merrill High School, Class of 1935. He was honorably discharged from the 32nd Division, Army National Guard, in 1936. He and his wife lived in California in the 1940s where he was a stockroom supervisor at the Rohm and Haas Co. where they built aircraft components for the military during World War II. In 1946 they moved back to the Merrill area where they bought his father-in-law's farm in the town of Hamburg. He served as a school bus owner and operator for Merrill Area Public Schools for 35 years. He also was an insurance agent for Wausau Mutual Insurance Co. for 30 years. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, town of Berlin, since 1939, where he served in various offices. He enjoyed traveling and visited most of the United Sates, including Hawaii. He also traveled to Europe and China. He left the farm in 1992 to live in Merrill. In 2002 he moved to California to be closer to his children, where he lived until the time of his death.

Survivors besides his wife Gladys include his daughter Sharon Sandwisch, Santa Barbara, Calif.; son Jerome (Donna), Zenia, Calif.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Mae Boushley and Corleen Oelke of Merrill. He was preceded in death by brothers Orlen and August and sister Ena Reger.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, town of Berlin. Rev. Jeffrey Schmidt will officiate. Interment will be in Merrill Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Thursday evening, Aug. 24, at the Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, and from noon until the hour of services on Friday at the church.

Pallbearers are Karl's grandsons Steven Sandwisch and Michael Heldt; and his nephews James Krueger, Brian Krueger, Larry Krueger and Bruce Seefeld.
