Howard E. Rajek

Howard E. "Ookie" Rajek, 79, of 2100 E. Sixth St., Merrill, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

Howard was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Merrill, son of the late David and Frieda Bruessow Rajek. He married Janice Krause on April 11, 1953. She survives.

Howard served in the U.S. Navy from Jan. 15, 1945, until his honorable discharge on Aug. 16, 1946. He was with the occupation forces following World War II. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. Howard worked as a cook for 23 years at the former Hinz's Cork & Dyne in Merrill, then for 15 years he and his wife owned and operated "Rajek's Riverside Club" in Merrill. Howard was very proud to also have been a greeter at the Merrill Wal-Mart. He was an avid sports fan.

Survivors besides his wife Janice, Merrill; include daughter Crystal (Mike) Josiger, Merrill; sons Marty (Lynette), Schofield; and Randy (Chris), Merrill; son-in-law Jeff Mondeik, Gleason; grandchildren Jenny, Stacey,Kyle, Jenni, Lindsey and Mindy; and his twin sister Marcella Brockway, Lake Wales, Fla. He was preceded in death by daughter Jean Mondeik, and brother Edgar.

Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. Joseph Kleinheinz officiated. Military rites were conducted by VFW Post 1638, Merrill, immediately following the service. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family.
