Leslie E. “Les” Kanitz, 87, of 201 N. State St., Merrill, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.

Les was born May 13, 1918, in Merrill, son of the late Gustave and Anna Wendland Kanitz. He married Dorothy Oknewski in Merrill on Oct. 31, 1942. She survives.

Les was the owner and operator of the former ‘Mid City Service’ in Merrill. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. He enjoyed spending time in the woods on his property where he would feed and care for the tame deer. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting firewood, and spending time with all his grandchildren. Les served in the U. S. Army from 1945 until 1946 and was a prison guard at the Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Merrill; daughter Lorraine Koch; Racine; sons Allan (Julie), Merrill; Dale (Rose), Rib Mountain; and Daniel (Dawn), Merrill; grandchildren Kimberly; Nicole, Karla, Alexis and Erin; great-grandchildren Brandyn, Bailee, Benjamin, Bryce, Madison and Kendall; step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Sarah; step-great-grandchildren, Emma and Anna; and brother Lylas, Merrill.

He was preceded in death by sisters Alice Kanitz and Eleanor Schulz and brothers Alvin ‘Butch’ and Elmer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 Thursday, March 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. David Klemm will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park where graveside military rates will be conducted by WFW Post 1638 Honor Guard. Visitation is tonight from 4-8 p.m. at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and again Thursday morning after 9 a.m. at the church.
