Hildegarde H. Karau, 91, of 2100 E. Sixth Street, Merrill, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

Hildegarde was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Merrill, daughter of the late Otto and Meta Kienbaum Yunkherr. She married Sylas Karau on July 4, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1994.

Hildegarde had been a bookkeeper at the former Gambles Store in Merrill and had clerked at the former McClellan’s Department Store in Merrill. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing and the company of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Cindy (Alan) Vandre, Merrill; son Thomas (Rhonda), Merrill; and grandchildren Katie (Bill) Baumann and Melissa and Peter Vandre, all of Merrill. She was preceded in death by sisters Dorothy Bickford and Grace Bachhuber and brothers Carl and Bob Yunkherr.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 28, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. Alden Beversdorf officiated. Entombment was in Merrill Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family.
