Edith Tracy

Edith Pearl Tracy, 88, a lifelong resident of Crandon, died Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at the Crandon Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the last 7 1/2 years.

Edith was born in Merrill, Wis., on October 27, 1915, the daughter of John and Laura (Fenton) Lambert. She grew up in Crandon and graduated from Crandon High School with the Class of 1933. She went on to Stevens Point where she attended the Wisconsin State Teachers College. On May 29, 1937, she married Francis Tracy in Stevens Point. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1973.

Edith enjoyed many things in life, and would often spend time outside in the beautiful outdoors of the Northwoods. She loved to watch the wildlife, the birds and gardening. She also enjoyed taking in the views of other sites through travelling, whether close to home or to Hawaii. During the winter, she would take her yellow chair and a bucket and strike out for her favorite place on the lake where she could catch enough "Edith fish" for her family to eat, namely small perch that she loved filleting and cooking for everyone. Her love of cooking led to a great many big chicken dinners for her family as well as fruitcakes which broke the norm by being edible and actually quite good.

Always feisty and never one to be afraid of trying anything, she will be fondly remembered for putting on her red swimsuit and running off the end of the dock and jumping into the lake with the kids at the age of 70; not to mention the time she and her grandchildren chased rabbits around the house with a fish net and rubber boots after the rabbits got loose from their cages.

Edith was also a faithful parishioner of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Crandon, a member of the Halcyon Chapter 178 Order of the Easter Star (life member), a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Crandon Women's Club. Most of all, Edith loved the time spent with her family and friends, and she will be sadly missed.

Edith is survived by her children: Ruth (Robert) Kitzman of Rhinelander, Linda (Charles) Metzger of Waukesha, Richard (Julaine) Tracy of Rhinelander and Arthur (Connie) Tracy of Crandon She is further survived by a sister, Loretta Telecky of Iowa City, Iowa; two brothers, George Lambert of Fernley, Nev., and John Lambert of Prescott, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren: Michael, Patrick, Tracey, Erin, Jeffrey, John, Kimberley, Jill, Mark, Sarah, Katy and Molly; five great-grandchildren: Laura, Claire, Eric, Dakota and Ethan; and numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant brother and an infant sister.

Friends may call upon the family at the Suminski Funeral Home in Crandon on Friday, December 26, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m, the members of the Halcyon Chapter 178 Order of the Eastern Star will honor Edith with a final service. Friends may also call upon the family on Saturday, December 27, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Crandon.

At 11 a.m., Pastor Michael Herdt will lead the services. Following services, Edith will be taken in formal procession to the Crandon Lakeside Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Further inquiries may be directed to the funeral home at 715-478-2322.
