Mildred J. Latzig

Mildred J. "Millie" Latzig, 81, of N2781 Pine Grove Rd., Merrill, formerly of the town of Pine River, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at her winter home in Florida under the care of her family and hospice services.

Millie was born March 31, 1925, in the town of Pine River, Lincoln County, daughter of the late Robert and Jane Chase Kufahl. She married Frederick R. "Fritz" Latzig on Aug. 21, 1948. He preceded her in death on May 22, 2006.

Millie and Fritz operated a dairy farm in the town of Pine River. In 1951 they started "Badger Evergreen Farms," and thus began a long career in growing and selling Christmas trees throughout the Midwest and Florida. For almost 30 years, Millie herself operated their Christmas tree lot in Des Moines, Iowa. Millie loved to travel, hunt, and fish, locally, as well as out in the western states and Alaska. She was also an avid baseball fan. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill, and the River Ranch Chapel, River Ranch, Fla.

Survivors include her daughters Jane (Butch) Allen, Allegan, Mich.; Susan (John) Rajek, Eagle River, Alaska; Donna (Dale) Hinz, Merrill; and Nancy (Elmer) Koehler, Wausau; sons Steven (Cindy), Frederick Jr. and Scott, all of Merrill; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and brother Ellsworth (Joyce) Kufahl, Merrill.

She was preceded in death by sisters Dolores Lemke, Nina Dettmering, Alice Hirnschall, Norma Fox, Eileen Schmidke and Marjorie Ann Kufahl.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. Alden J. Beversdorf will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and after 9 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to hospice or St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill.
