Marvin F. Utech, 91, Merrill, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.

He was born July 27, 1913, to the late Frank and Frieda (Schult) Utech in Merrill. Marvin married Eva Natzke on Nov. 15, 1935, in the Town of Pine River. She preceded him in death on April 18, 1983. On Sept. 20, 1986, he married Rhoda Pehlke in Merrill. She died on Nov. 10, 1998.

Marvin graduated from Merrill High School in 1931, having been the senior class president. In the 1940s and '50s, he worked as a bookkeeper for the Natzke and Scheu Company as they logged in the Upper Peninsula. He continued to work for the Natzke and Scheu when they moved their operation to Merrill and became Merrill Gravel and Construction Co. Marvin retired in 1978.

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church for much of his life, he served on the boards of Finance, Evangelism and with the Special Funds Committee. For 42 years, Marvin served on the Merrill Memorial Park and 33 years as president. Marvin was a 20 years member of the Merrill Evening Lions, where he served a number of terms as treasurer. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1996.

Marvin loved his family. He prayed for each child, grandchild and great-grandchild every night. His favorite place in all the world was the family cottage on Clearwater Lake. Marvin will be remembered as a gentle man who was unfailingly kind and generous.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Wayne) McCaughey, Maryland, and Jane (Leonard) Francoeur, Merrill; two sons, Marvin (Mildred) Utech Jr., New York, and William (Lori) Utech, Missouri; one stepdaughter, Kathy Altergott, Green Bay; one stepson, Richard (Penny) Pehlke, Merrill; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Lorna and Marcella.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. The Rev. David Klemm will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, and will begin again at 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Debt Retirement Fund or the Radio Ministry.
