---Zackert, Barbara (6 Sept. 1952 – 6 Jan. 2005)

Barbara Gilkey Zackert, 52, of Nashville, Tenn., died Thursday, January 6, 2004 [should be 2005], surrounded by family and friends at her home following a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Barbara was born in Merrill on September 6, 1952, daughter of the late George and Edna Gilkey. She married William E. Zackert, who survives.

Barbara attended UW Madison before receiving a BFA in photography from East Tennessee State University. Upon graduation in 1976, she moved to Nashville and made it her home. A highly creative artist, Barb enjoyed simultaneous careers as a talented photographer, landscape designer and creator of elegant window treatments and home accessories. She traveled extensively in Central and South America, always capturing the people, landscape and culture in photographs. Barb adored her husband Bill and dearly loved her friends. She enjoyed her book club and flourished in her Richland neighborhood. Full of life and with a sharp wit, Barb laugh often, and was known for her straight-forward honesty. She loved to have a good time. Even while receiving treatment for her illness, she continued to live life on her own terms. Barb will be missed terribly and remembered lovingly, always.

Survivors include William, her husband of 20 years; sons John (Annie), St. Paul, Minn.; sisters Susan Gilkey Johnson and Madge Gilkey; brother George Gilkey; seven nieces and nephews and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by sister Judy Gilkey Ullmer.

Her family is planning a private memorial services. Crawford Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Antioch, Tenn., is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, her family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Alive Hospice of Nashville, Tenn.
