Alvin Batchelder

Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Memorial service for Alvin A. Batchelder, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Hayden Bible Fellowship Church in Hayden, Idaho.

Mr. Batchelder, who was born in Rockford Falls, Wis., died Tuesday.

He moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1941 and graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1942, earning All Panhandle honors in football.

He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with the 1688th Engineer Battalion. Some of his duties included training troops and he was part of the Japanese Occupation Forces. He was discharged while in Japan but re-enlisted in the Army, serving with the 127th Training Battalion RTC. He was discharged in 1947.

He married Blythe Kessler later that year. After working at the Rutledge Mill in Coeur d'Alene, he moved his family to Garden Grove, Calif., in 1954, where he worked as a finish carpenter and later started his own mobile catering service, Al's Lunch Service.

He retired to Dalton Gardens in 1983.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, golfing and playing cards. At family gatherings he would frequently get out his accordion and play his favorite polkas or self-taught songs.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and a volunteer with the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Philip Batchelder of Post Falls, Paula Padgitt of Coeur d'Alene and Alana Mowrer of Merced, Calif.; two brothers, Leland and Delbert; three sisters, Ila, Delores and Margaret; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
