Irma Man Is Killed on Highway 51

Lincoln County recorded it's ninth traffic fatality of 1957 last Thursday when a Town of Birch resident was struck on Highway 51 as he walked from his mailbox.

Killed was Joseph Allorie, 77, who lives about a mile and half north of Irma.

The Victim was struck about 11:45 a.m. by an automobile driven north by Elroy H. Grell, 1209 South 11th Avenue, Wausau.

According to County Patrolman LeRoy Degner, Grell said he was driving about 45-45 mph. Allorie was at the mail box, started across the road and Grell sounded his horn, according to the report. Allorie then apparently changed his mind and ran into the path of the automobile, Degner said.

The victim was a retired woodsman. He had worked for the Stange Lumber Company. He was born Feb. 8, 1880 in Canada to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Allorie. He married Marian DesJardin in Spalding, Mich. on June 24, 1902.

Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Rudolph (Sarah) Tewes, Merrill, and Mrs. Harold (Gertrude) Robertson, Waterford, Wis.; two sons, Thomas, Irma and Leonard Merrill; two brothers, Adolph and Jerry Escanaba, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Rosanna Aldrich and Mrs. Elsie Collette, both of Escanaba; and 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday in the Krueger funeral home and in St. Francis Xavier Catholic church, both at Merrill. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery there.
