(11 Sept. 1922 – 20 March 2005) Dorothy M. Lindstrom, 82, of 2100 E. Sixth St., Merrill, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dorothy was born September 11, 1922, in Stephenson, Mich., daughter of the late Blanche Tebo. She lived in Stephenson until orphaned at age seven, when she moved to Butte des Morts to live with her maternal aunt and uncle. At the age of 14, she moved to Neenah to live with her Grandma Bullis. She worked as a telephone operator in Neenah until joining the Women’s Army Air Corps in 1942. She worked as a cryptographer in Washington, D.C., until leaving the service in 1944. She married Second Lieutenant John W. “Jack” Lindstrom, an Air Force P-38 Pilot and her high school beau, in Kaukauna on August 16, 1944. The whole town turned out to see the two married in full dress uniform. Dorothy was a homemaker who raised three sons and four daughters, and made the best homemade bread in the world. She was a loving, gentle soul, and an avid reader and letter writer. Her family was her most precious gift to her. Survivors include her sons Steven (Mary), Green Bay; Mark (Vicki), Merrill; and Dan (Tammy), Frankfort, Ind.; daughters Gale (Al) Janquart, Merrill; Wendy Lindstrom, Irma; Jane (Greg) Stevenson, Irma; and Amy (Conrad) Sternot, Wausau; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack on April 19, 2003. Dorothy took on the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease with dignity, courage and faith. She participated in several drug studies through St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield early in her illness, and was instrumental in getting the first Alzheimer treatment drug Cognex approved for widespread use. A memorial visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, at the Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1638, Merrill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the TB Scott Library or the Alzheimer’ Association. The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Crest Nursing Home for treating their mother with kindness and respect.
