Herman E. Karpenske Jr., 88, of Merrill, died Friday, March 28, 2005, at his home.

Herman was born December 10, 1916, in Springfield, Ill.; son of the late Herman and Emma Karpenske Sr. He married Florence Boettcher on September 6, 1941, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. She survives.

Herman worked at Semling and Menke in Merrill for approximately 25 years. He retired in 1986 after working 22 years as the custodian for St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Merrill. Herman was an active member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ where he was also involved in the Usher’s Club. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.

Survivors besides his wife Florence of Merrill include sons The Rev. Jack (Peggy), Lynchburg, Va.; and Cary (Emily Nelson), Wheaton, Ill.; five granddaughters, two grandsons and three great-grandsons. Also surviving are brother Robert, Sonoma, Calif.; and special niece Susan Kroplin, Wausau. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 23, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. Rev. Earl Eckhart officiated. Burial was in Merrill Memorial Park. The Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family.
